Why does the town matter for tree work?
Water comes first. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put annual precipitation at 9.34 inches at the Carson City station, 7.35 inches at Reno-Tahoe International Airport and 4.77 inches at the Fallon Experiment Station. With 4 to 10 inches a year on the valley floors, most valley trees were planted and depend on irrigation. On Tahoe's east shore the Glenbrook station records 18.46 inches and Daggett Pass, above Kingsbury, 21.80 inches, enough to grow native pine and fir.
Age comes second. Old neighborhoods have big trees. Census estimates put the share of homes built before 1980 at about 83% in Hawthorne, 76% in Virginia City, 73% in Zephyr Cove and 63% in ZIP 89509 (Old Southwest Reno). In Spanish Springs it is about 4%, and in ZIP 89523 (Northwest Reno) about 5%. Older streets mean large removals, crane work, cabling and dead wooding. Subdivisions from the 2000s mean young-tree pruning, stump grinding and root barriers.
The full tables are on the housing age, climate normals and elevation and hardiness zone pages.
Where is wildfire risk highest?
The USDA Forest Service ranks wildfire risk to homes for every community in the country. In its April 2026 data, Virginia City's risk to homes is higher than 99.4% of US communities, Lemmon Valley's higher than 99.2%, Dayton's higher than 98.9% and Carson City's higher than 98.5%. Reno and Incline Village both sit at 97.7%.
The same data shows the low end plainly: Fallon is at about the 31st percentile and Hawthorne about the 52nd. That is why defensible space leads on some town pages and not on others. Percentiles compare communities with each other and do not describe any single property. See every community on the wildfire risk table.
Do the rules change from town to town?
Yes, and the biggest change is at Lake Tahoe. In the Tahoe Basin, removing a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height needs a permit from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. On lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a permit. The agency decides, and the local fire protection district can permit trees removed for defensible space.
In Reno, no permit is needed to remove or prune a tree on private property, but work on trees in the City right-of-way needs a Tree Work Permit and a Certified Arborist. In Carson City, check with Carson City Public Works before work on a tree in the right-of-way. Each town page states what applies there, and the permit guide and the rules by jurisdiction table put it all in one place.
Nevada only
We work in Nevada. At Lake Tahoe that means the Nevada shore: Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Glenbrook, Zephyr Cove, Stateline and Kingsbury. If your property is on the Nevada side of the state line, we can help.
How to use the town pages
Pick your town from the lists on this page. Each town page shows the drive from our yard, the elevation, the USDA hardiness zone, the age of the housing, the wildfire ranking and the services that make sense there, with a link to each. ZIP-based neighborhood pages, such as South Reno (89521) or West Carson City (89703), use Census figures for the whole ZIP code and say so.
