What should you ask any firewood seller?
Firewood is sold by people of very different standards, so a few questions protect you wherever you buy.
- How is it measured? Ask for the amount in cords or a fraction of a cord. See how big is a cord of wood?
- What species is it? Dense woods burn longer; pine lights easily and burns fast. See firewood species in the Sierra and Great Basin.
- Is it seasoned? Wet wood smokes and gives less heat. See how to season and stack firewood.
- Where did it come from? Local wood is the right answer, for the reason below.
Why buy firewood close to home?
Because insects and diseases travel in firewood. Nevada prohibits bringing uncertified firewood into the state from areas quarantined for forest pests, which covers most out-of-state sources, and the Nevada Department of Agriculture's advice is to buy firewood where you will use it. Wood bought from a Carson City yard and burned in Carson City, Reno or the valleys nearby follows that advice. The rules are explained in don't move firewood: the Nevada rules.
Who heats with wood around here?
More households than most people guess. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey counts homes whose main heating fuel is wood.
| Area | Households heating mainly with wood |
|---|---|
| Washoe County | about 2,270 (1.1%) |
| Lyon County | about 1,030 (4.4%) |
| Douglas County | about 960 (4.5%) |
| Carson City | about 290 (1.2%) |
| Storey County | 9.9% of households |
| Nevada | 1.0% of households |
| United States | 1.4% of households |
Those figures count only homes where wood is the main fuel. Many more burn wood for backup heat or for the pleasure of a fire. If you burn in Washoe County, check the daily burn code first: Washoe County burn codes explained. The full table is on who heats with wood in Northern Nevada.
What are wood chips good for?
Chips make a good surface for paths, play areas and the ground under trees, where they hold moisture in a dry climate and keep weeds down.
They are not for every spot. The University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Living With Fire guide says to remove wood mulch from the first 5 feet around a house, and between 5 and 30 feet to use mulch only in patches broken up by gravel, rock or irrigated lawn. Read wood chips: uses and limits in a fire-prone yard before you spread a load. Call the office to ask what chips are available.
