Round Hill Village at a glance
The Census counts about 820 people and 352 households in Round Hill Village against 802 housing units. That gap, more than two units for every household, is what a place with many second homes looks like. Figures are approximate; the community is small.
What does the housing count say about the trees?
About 81% of Round Hill's housing was built before 1980, only about 2% before 1960 and about 7% since 2000; the median home dates from 1975. About 48% of housing is single-family detached and about 91% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024, Round Hill Village CDP).
Conifers planted or left standing when the 1970s buildings went up are fifty years old and more, many of them tall over roofs and decks. Condo and townhome complexes mean the trees often belong to an association; see tree service for HOAs and property managers.
What is different about a second-home community?
Some Round Hill homes are probably empty for part of the year, so a limb that cracks in November may not be seen until spring. Our guide to vacation home tree care at Lake Tahoe covers what an owner who is away can arrange.
No households in the sample report wood as a main heating fuel.
How high is it, and which station?
Round Hill sits at about 6,473 feet, hardiness zone 6b on the 2023 USDA map. The Daggett Pass gauge is 2.9 miles away and about 860 feet higher, and averages 21.8 inches of precipitation and a 43.3-degree mean temperature (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). That station has no snowfall normal we can quote. Tahoe City, across the lake in California and 16 miles off, records 179.0 inches a year, which is a reference for a snowy lake shore and not a Round Hill figure.
Whatever the exact depth, snow loads on conifers here are heavy and wet. See heavy snow and broken limbs.
What are the fire numbers?
The USDA Forest Service record for Round Hill Village counts 529 buildings: about 49% in the direct wildfire exposure zone, about 49% indirect and about 3% minimal. Risk to homes is rated higher than 97.9% of US communities and higher than about 78% of Nevada communities.
Four perimeters of 300 acres or more since 1980 have a mapped center within about 10 miles: the Gondola Fire of 2002 (643 acres, about 3 miles), Walley's Fire of 1984 (316 acres, about 6 miles), the Autumn Hills Fire of 1996 (3,805 acres, about 6 miles) and the Angora Fire of 2007 (3,070 acres, about 9 miles). The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates defensible space; see its page.

Rules here
This community is inside the Tahoe Basin, where the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. On lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for live trees between the house and the lake. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit.
TRPA also asks for a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates defensible space and can issue the fire-safety tree permit. The agency decides.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules
