By the numbers
Crystal Bay at a glance
Crystal Bay covers less than half a square mile at about 6,396 feet. The Census counts roughly 130 year-round residents and about 215 housing units, so treat every figure on this page as approximate. It is the last Nevada community before California, and our work is on the Nevada side.
What makes tree work in Crystal Bay different?
Age and space. About 59% of Crystal Bay homes were built before 1980 and close to half before 1960, and the Census sample shows none built since 2000 (ACS 2020-2024, a very small sample). That makes this one of the oldest housing stocks anywhere we work at the lake. The trees beside a 1950s cabin have had seventy years to grow.
With around 215 homes on 0.45 square miles, the lots are tight and the ground falls toward the water. There is rarely an open spot to drop a trunk. Sections have to be lowered on ropes or lifted out. That is the case for crane-assisted removal in Crystal Bay: the crane lifts each piece up and away from the roof below instead of swinging it past.
Is Crystal Bay at risk from wildfire?
Yes, though it ranks a little below its neighbors. The USDA Forest Service rates risk to homes in Crystal Bay higher than 92.9% of US communities and higher than about half of Nevada communities. About 27% of buildings are in the direct exposure zone and about 71% in the indirect zone, where embers and burning neighboring structures are the threat.
Five fire perimeters of 300 acres or more have a mapped center within about 10 miles since 1980, among them the Martis Fire of 2001 at 14,429 acres and the Royal Fire of 2003 at 339 acres. In a place where houses stand this close together, the first five feet around each building matter most. UNR Extension's Living With Fire guide calls that Zone 0, the ember-resistant zone. See defensible space in Crystal Bay.
How cold does it get?
The nearest station with a temperature record is Incline Village, about 3.6 miles away at 6,356 feet, with a mean annual temperature of 46.0 degrees (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). The 2023 USDA map places ZIP 89402 in hardiness zone 7a, a half zone milder than Incline, which fits a community pressed against the lake.
No Nevada-side station near Crystal Bay publishes a snowfall normal. Tahoe City, across the lake in California, records 179.0 inches a year, a fair picture of what north shore trees carry. For what that weight does to a crown, read storm and snow load breakage.
Who owns the trees here, and who arranges the work?
About 215 housing units and about 65 occupied households means most Crystal Bay homes are not lived in all year. Of the homes that are occupied, roughly nine in ten are owner-occupied. An owner can arrange everything by phone and have a caretaker meet us at the property.
That works well with how we estimate. A certified arborist looks at every job before work begins, and the estimate is detailed and easy to understand, so someone who was not standing in the yard can follow it. Start with an arborist visit in Crystal Bay or a free estimate.
Which services do we bring to Crystal Bay?
Tree removal, trimming and pruning, stump grinding and emergency tree service are all offered here. The trip from our Carson City yard is about 33 miles and about 53 minutes without traffic, the longest drive of the six Tahoe communities we serve, so we plan Crystal Bay jobs to bring the right equipment the first time.

Rules here
Crystal Bay falls under the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. Removing a live tree larger than 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk) takes a TRPA permit. Some Crystal Bay parcels run down to the water, and on lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for trees standing between the house and the lake. No permit is needed for a dead tree that could fall on a house.
The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District handles defensible space evaluations and the tree permits that go with them. The agency decides what may be cut.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules

Do the Tahoe tree permit rules apply in Crystal Bay?
Yes. Crystal Bay is in the Tahoe Basin, so TRPA's limits apply: a permit for live trees over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, and over 6 inches on lakeshore lots between the house and the lake.
Do you work on the California side next to Crystal Bay?
No. Our tree work is in Nevada. Crystal Bay is the western edge of our north shore service area.
How do you remove a tall tree on a small Crystal Bay lot?
In sections. A climber or a lift takes the tree apart from the top, and where access allows, our crane lifts each section out over the house to the truck. The arborist chooses the method after seeing the site.
How long is the drive from your yard to Crystal Bay?
About 53 minutes without traffic, roughly 33 miles from 6301 US Highway 50 East in Carson City. Winter road conditions can lengthen it.
