Tree removal in Reno, Carson City and Lake Tahoe, NV
Tree removal from Battle Born Tree Service starts with a certified arborist looking at the tree and the site, then a crew takes it down in sections by climber, 75-foot boom truck or crane and hauls the wood and brush away. We remove small and large trees for homes and businesses in Reno, Sparks, Carson City and on Lake Tahoe's Nevada side, working from our yard in Carson City, and estimates are free.

A tree comes out for one of a few reasons: it is dead, it is damaged, it is decaying, or it has outgrown the place it was planted. The first job is to work out which, and whether removal is really the answer. That is why an arborist walks the job before anyone starts a saw.

The pine tree they removed towered over our house by approximately 50 feet-but no problem-a crane arrived and they separated the tree in several pieces and air lifted it up over the house and right into the shredder.
When does a tree need to come out?
The most common reasons are signs of decay and damage. Roots or branches growing too close to the house are another, and so is a tree that blocks a view you want back. Some signs are easy to spot. Others, such as interior decay, cracks in the trunk, disease and insect infestation, take a trained eye.
If you are not sure there is a problem, ask before you decide. Our arborists make a recommendation for the tree in front of them, and sometimes that is pruning, dead wooding or cabling instead of removal.
- Dead trees, or trees with large dead sections
- Storm damage: split trunks, torn limbs, a new lean
- Decay at the base, in the trunk or in a main fork
- Roots lifting or pushing on the house, pipes or a septic tank
- Trees crowding a roof, a chimney or a neighbor's property
How is a tree removed?
Almost no yard tree is felled in one piece. It is taken apart from the top down, and the method depends on what is underneath it and how the crew can reach it.
| Method | When the arborist chooses it |
|---|---|
| Climber with ropes | Trees a truck cannot reach, and trees sound enough to climb |
| 75-foot boom truck | Trees near a street or driveway where the bucket can reach the crown |
| Crane | Large trees over a house, dead or brittle trees, yards with no room to lower pieces |
The estimate says which method the arborist plans and why. For the crane process step by step, see crane-assisted tree removal. For the big ones, see large tree removal.
What happens to the wood, the brush and the stump?
Brush goes through the chipper. Logs are loaded with the track loader and hauled off in our trucks. Reviewers mention the clean-up more than anything else. One wrote, "When they were finished the clean up job was spectacular and no debris was left behind." (L. Gen, Google review)
The stump is a separate decision. Estimates are tailored to each client, so tell us if you want stump grinding and it goes on the same estimate.
Do you need a permit to remove a tree?
It depends on where the tree stands. The rules below are the ones that come up most in our service area. The agency decides, and we can talk through what applies when we look at the tree.
| Place | What the rule says |
|---|---|
| Reno, private property | No City permit to remove a tree on private property |
| Reno, City right-of-way | A Tree Work Permit, and the work must be done by a Certified Arborist |
| Carson City | Check with Carson City Public Works for trees in the right-of-way |
| Lake Tahoe Basin | A TRPA permit for live trees over 14 inches in diameter at 4.5 feet; 6 inches between a lakeshore house and the lake |
In the Tahoe Basin, a dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a permit. Homeowner associations often have their own rules on top of these. The full picture is in our permit guide.
Why not take it down yourself?
We do not recommend removing a tree on your own. Removal is risky and dangerous work, and the risk climbs with the size of the tree and how close it stands to a house or a wire. If a line is involved, stay away from the tree and call NV Energy first.

Tree removal questions
Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.
How much does tree removal cost?
Every tree is different, so we do not publish prices. Height, lean, access, what is underneath and whether you want the stump ground all change the job. The estimate is free and detailed, and it comes after an arborist has seen the tree.
Is stump grinding included in tree removal?
All estimates are tailored to each client and their needs. Tell us you want the stump ground and it is added to the same estimate.
Do you remove trees for businesses and HOAs?
Yes. We do residential and commercial tree removal, including work for property managers and homeowner associations.
Can you remove a tree that is close to my house?
Yes. Close quarters are what the boom truck and the crane are for. The arborist checks the site first and plans where each piece will go.
How soon can you come out to look at a tree?
Call the office and we will set up a time. Phones are answered seven days a week, and messages are returned within 8 hours. For a tree that is down or on a structure, use the same number for 24-hour emergency service.
