ZIP 89502 holds about 19,300 households on 22 square miles, and it is one of the older, more rented corners of Reno. The citywide page on tree service in Reno averages the whole city; this page sticks to what the Census says about this ZIP.

How old are the homes, and the trees, in ZIP 89502?

About 62% of housing in the ZIP was built before 1980 and about 16% before 1960, against 37% and 12% for Reno as a whole. Only about 12% has gone up since 2000, where the city figure is 36%. The median home here dates from 1977, thirteen years older than Reno's 1990 median (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024, ZCTA 89502).

A tree planted beside a 1977 house is close to fifty years old now. Trees that age carry long limbs over roofs, fences and sidewalks, and removals tend to be large ones in tight spaces. Our guide to tight-backyard removals explains how a crew gets a big tree down when it cannot simply fall.

Who decides about the trees on a rented lot?

Only about 36% of ZIP 89502 households own their home, compared with about 50% across Reno, and only about a third of homes are single-family detached. Mobile homes make up about 7% of housing, roughly double the city share. Many trees here probably stand on land owned by a landlord, a park operator or an association rather than by the person who lives under them.

That changes who you call. If you rent, the owner or manager has to approve removal or pruning. If you manage the property, see tree service for HOAs and property managers. General information only: the owner of the land, and the agency where public property is involved, decides.

What is the ground and weather like?

The ZIP sits at about 4,394 feet, around 110 feet lower than the central Reno point, and the 2023 USDA map rates it hardiness zone 7b. A rain gauge 1.5 miles away (Reno 6.8 SE) averages 9.87 inches of precipitation a year, and Reno-Tahoe International Airport, also 1.5 miles off, records 20.9 inches of snow and a 55-degree mean temperature (NOAA 1991-2020 normals).

Under ten inches of rain means every shade tree depends on a hose or a drip line. A tree that has lost its water supply shows it in the crown first. See watering mature trees in the high desert.

What do the fire numbers say for ZIP 89502?

The USDA Forest Service publishes wildfire figures for Census places, and a ZIP has none of its own, so the figures here are Reno's: risk to homes higher than 97.7% of US communities, and about 5% of the city's buildings in the direct exposure zone. Do not read them as this ZIP's number.

The fire record around it is its own. Thirty-three perimeters of 300 acres or more since 1980 have a mapped center within about 10 miles. They include the Arrowcreek Fire of 2000, mapped at 2,788 acres with its center about 6 miles away, the Prater Fire of 2017 at 2,700 acres, about 6 miles, and the Sparks Fire of 1983 at 25,541 acres, about 9 miles. Wood is the main heat for about 0.5% of households here, a little above the city's 0.3%.

Rules here

The City of Reno does not require a permit to remove or prune a tree on private property. A tree in a City right-of-way or on City property needs a Tree Work Permit, and the work must be done by a Certified Arborist. Reno Urban Forestry answers questions about which strip of ground is which.

If you are unsure whether your lot is inside the city limits, ask before the work. Association rules, where they exist, still apply. We have an ISA Certified Arborist on staff, WE-11728A. The agency decides.

The owner or property manager decides, because the tree is theirs. Ask them to call for an estimate, or call us with the address and we will explain what the arborist would look at.
