East of Carson City the country opens into sagebrush, river bottom and old mining ground. Trees grow where there is water: along the Carson River at Dayton, the Truckee at Wadsworth, the Walker at Yerington and in Smith Valley. Everything else is brush.

How different are these towns from one another?

They differ a lot in drive time, elevation and housing age: Dayton is about 12 minutes away with about 10% of homes built before 1980, while Virginia City sits at 6,198 feet with about 76%. The table below compares every town.

Housing figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau's ACS 2020-2024 and are rounded, because several of these places are small. The contrast is the point: Dayton and Fernley are mostly 2000s subdivisions with young trees, while the median Virginia City house dates from 1956 and Yerington is an old farm town with trees to match.

What makes Virginia City its own case?

Height, age and fire. At about 6,200 feet, the Virginia City station records 46.4 inches of snow in a normal year, more than three times the Carson City figure, on 11.70 inches of precipitation (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). More than half the homes were built before 1960. The USDA Forest Service ranks the town's wildfire risk to homes higher than 99.4% of US communities, the highest figure in our service area, and about a quarter of households heat mainly with wood.

The town is built on a steep hillside, so getting a large tree out can mean lifting it. We offer crane-assisted removal in Virginia City for that reason.

Is brush clearing a bigger job than tree work out here?

Often, yes. Dayton's risk to homes ranks above 98.9% of US communities. About 67% of buildings in Silver Springs, 40% in Stagecoach and 90% in Smith Valley sit in the direct-exposure zone, where wildland fuel runs right up to the structure. The Linehan Fire of 2006 is mapped at 5,863 acres within about 10 miles of both Dayton and Virginia City.

On open parcels the tool is a machine: brush mowing for sage and rabbitbrush, masticating where pinyon and juniper have moved in, and lot clearing ahead of a build. If you are building, start with lot clearing before building in Lyon and Douglas counties.

How dry is Lyon County?

Very dry on the valley floors. The Yerington station records 4.58 inches of precipitation and 3.2 inches of snow in a normal year, and the station near Fernley 7.61 inches of precipitation. A shade tree in that climate lives on ditch or well water. When the water is cut back, the crown dies back from the top, which is covered in drought stress and dieback.

Which services reach which towns?

Tree removal, pruning and certified arborist visits are offered in all eight. Stump grinding is offered from Dayton through Fernley and Wadsworth. For Yerington and Smith Valley, about 80 minutes out, it pays to tell us about every tree in one call.
