Tree service in Zephyr Cove, NV

Battle Born Tree Service provides tree service in Zephyr Cove, on Lake Tahoe's southeast shore in Douglas County. About 73% of the homes here were built before 1980, so the usual job is a tall, mature conifer close to an older cabin: removal, crane work, dead wooding or clearance pruning.

Why is so much Zephyr Cove work large-tree work?

Because the housing is old for Tahoe. About 73% of Zephyr Cove homes predate 1980, about a third predate 1960, and the median home was built in 1972 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; a small community, so the figures are approximate). Only about one home in ten has been built since 2000.

A pine that stood well clear of a cabin in 1960 can now have its crown over the ridge line and its roots under the driveway. When one of those trees has to come down there is seldom room to fell it. We take it apart in sections, and where a crane can set up, each section is lifted clear of the roof. See crane-assisted removal in Zephyr Cove and large tree removal.

How does Zephyr Cove rank for wildfire risk?

High. The USDA Forest Service rates risk to homes in Zephyr Cove above 98.0% of US communities and above about 80% of Nevada communities, the highest national ranking among the Nevada-side Tahoe communities we serve. About 30% of buildings are in the direct exposure zone and about 67% in the indirect zone.

Four fire perimeters of 300 acres or more have a mapped center within about 10 miles since 1980. The Autumn Hills Fire of 1996 was mapped at 3,805 acres and the Gondola Fire of 2002 at 643 acres. Old cabins with mature trees touching the eaves are exactly what a defensible space plan is written for: defensible space in Zephyr Cove.

What weather do the trees deal with?

The nearest climate station is Daggett Pass, 3.5 miles away at the top of the Kingsbury Grade. It sits at 7,334 feet, about 1,100 feet above Zephyr Cove, so read its numbers as the upper end: 21.80 inches of precipitation a year and a mean annual temperature of 43.3 degrees (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). It publishes no snowfall normal.

The 2023 USDA map puts Zephyr Cove in hardiness zone 6b, with an average extreme winter low of minus 5 to 0 degrees. After a storm, look up before you walk under a tree: a broken limb hung in the canopy is called a widow-maker for a reason.

Rules here

Zephyr Cove is covered by Tahoe Regional Planning Agency rules. Live trees over 14 inches in diameter, measured 4.5 feet above the ground, need a TRPA permit to remove. For lakeshore lots, any live tree over 6 inches between the house and the lake needs one. Dead trees that could fall on a house can be removed without a permit.

TRPA also requires a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District issues defensible space tree permits after an evaluation of the property. The agency decides.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.

Enter the measurement to see the diameter.

This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.

Do I need a permit to trim a tree in Zephyr Cove?

Sometimes. TRPA requires a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, except for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. Ask TRPA or the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District before major pruning.

How do I know if my Zephyr Cove tree is over 14 inches?

Measure around the trunk 4.5 feet above the ground and divide by 3.14 to get the diameter. A trunk about 44 inches around is 14 inches across. The checker on this page does the arithmetic.

How far is your yard from Zephyr Cove?

About 25 miles, about 38 minutes without traffic, coming over Spooner Summit on US 50.

Can you grind the stump after removing a tree in Zephyr Cove?

Yes. Stump grinding can be included in the estimate. Every estimate is tailored to the client, so tell us whether you want the stump ground.
