By the numbers
Reno at a glance
Reno is the largest city we work in, about 273,000 people on about 109 square miles. It is really several different tree markets, and this page explains which is which.
Arriving on time for both estimate & project they possessed the manpower & equipment to complete our project beyond our expectations.
Which parts of Reno have the big trees?
Citywide, about 37% of Reno homes were built before 1980 and about 12% before 1960, against roughly 36% built since 2000 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024). The median home dates from 1990. Those averages hide a sharp split.
In the downtown ZIP, 89501, about 59% of housing predates 1980 and a quarter predates 1960. Old Southwest Reno is similar. Out at the edges, in South Reno and Northwest Reno and Somersett, fewer than one home in ten is that old. Old core means tall trees over houses and crane work. New edge means young trees, structural pruning and stump grinding.
Who owns the trees?
Only about half of Reno's homes are owner-occupied, and about half are single-family detached. The rest are apartments, condos, townhomes and rentals, where the trees belong to a landlord or an association. If you manage one of those properties, see tree service for HOAs and property managers and commercial properties.
How much rain and snow do Reno trees get?
Very little rain. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals give Reno-Tahoe International Airport 7.35 inches of precipitation and 20.9 inches of snow a year, with a mean temperature of 55 degrees. The Reno weather office on the north side, almost 600 feet higher, records 8.09 inches of precipitation and 29.7 inches of snow.
Seven to eight inches of water is desert. Every shade tree in the city is irrigated, and a tree that loses its water shows it in the crown first. Our guide to watering mature trees in the high desert covers the basics. The 2023 USDA map rates central Reno as hardiness zone 7b.
What is Reno's wildfire risk?
The USDA Forest Service ranks Reno's wildfire risk to homes above 97.7% of US communities and above about 75% of Nevada communities. About 5% of the city's buildings are in the direct exposure zone and another 42% in the indirect zone. A little over half are rated minimal exposure.
Thirty-four fire perimeters of 300 acres or more are mapped with a center point within about 10 miles of downtown since 1980. They include the Belli Ranch Fire of 1996, mapped at 6,724 acres, the Verdi Fire of 2006 at 5,662 acres, the Poeville Road Fire of 2020 at 2,973 acres, and the Hawk Fire of 2026, mapped at 15,083 acres so far. Exposure is highest where neighborhoods meet open hillside. See defensible space in Reno.

Rules here
The City of Reno does not require a permit to remove, prune or plant a tree on private property. A tree in a City right-of-way or on City property is different: that work needs a Tree Work Permit and must be done by a Certified Arborist. Reno Urban Forestry takes questions at 775-321-8373.
Homeowner associations and development sites can carry their own tree requirements. If your tree is near the curb and you are not sure whose it is, ask Urban Forestry before you book the work. We have an ISA Certified Arborist on staff, WE-11728A.
