What should I have ready?

Have the address, what you want done, anything near the tree, and how a truck can reach it. The list below has the details.

  • The property address or the nearest cross streets
  • What you want done: removal, pruning, stump grinding, brush clearing, snow removal or firewood
  • Anything near the tree: house, fence, power lines, septic or sprinklers
  • Gate width and how a truck can reach the tree
  • For Lake Tahoe properties, the trunk measurement at 4.5 feet if you have it

What does the arborist look at?

The tree first. Our arborists have a trained eye for the problems that are hard to see from the ground: interior decay, cracks in the trunk, disease and insect infestation. They also look at dead and weak branches and at roots growing toward the house, pipes or a septic tank.

Then the site. What is under the tree, where a crane or boom truck could set up, overhead obstacles and how close the structures are. That decides whether the job is a climb, a bucket job or a crane job.

Then the options. If pruning, dead wooding or cabling will solve the problem, you will hear that. If removal is the right call, you will hear why.

What is in the estimate?

Every estimate is detailed and easily understood, and it is tailored to you. Ask for what you want and it is written in. The most common example is the stump: grinding is included when you ask for it. If you want an estimate that covers several trees, a pruning plan for the whole yard or defensible space work around the house, say so when you call.

The guide to reading a tree service estimate explains the terms, and the glossary defines them.

Do photos replace the visit?

No. You can attach up to five photos to the form, and they help the office understand the job and send the right person. Every tree and every site is different, so an arborist still sees the job in person before the estimate is written.

Estimates at Lake Tahoe

On the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. If you can, wrap a tape around the trunk at that height and tell us the number. The Tahoe permit guide shows how to measure. The agency decides what needs a permit.

When should I call instead of using the form?

Call 775.232.8243 when a tree or large limb is down, on a structure or blocking a road or driveway. We offer 24-hour emergency service. If anyone is hurt, call 911 first. If a power line is involved, stay away from it and call NV Energy, then call us.

Call for firewood too. Availability and pricing come from the office, not from a form.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.

Does the estimate cost anything?

No. Our residential and commercial tree services always include a free estimate before any work is done.

Do I have to be home?

Tell the office how you would like to handle the visit. Many estimates need access to a back yard or a gate, so plan for that.

Do you give prices over the phone or by photo?

No. Every tree and every site is different, so the arborist sees the job in person first. Photos help the office understand what you need.

My tree is down right now. What should I do?

Do not wait for a form. Call 775.232.8243 for 24-hour emergency service. If anyone is hurt call 911, and if a power line is involved stay clear and call NV Energy.

How do I pay once the work is done?

We accept cash and major credit cards.
