Genoa has about 1,300 residents at roughly 4,789 feet. The mountain starts at the back fence: forest and brush run down the slope to the edge of town, and irrigated pasture runs away from it on the other side.

Why is Genoa's wildfire exposure so high?

Position. The USDA Forest Service places about 75% of Genoa's buildings in the direct exposure zone and the other 25% in the indirect zone. None are rated minimal. Across Douglas County as a whole, about 38% of buildings are directly exposed. Risk to homes in Genoa ranks higher than 97.4% of US communities and about 71% of Nevada communities.

Six fire perimeters of 300 acres or more have a mapped center within about 10 miles since 1980, including Autumn Hills in 1996 (3,805 acres), Gondola in 2002 (643 acres) and Walley's in 1984 (316 acres).

UNR Extension's Living With Fire guide divides the ground around a house into three zones: 0 to 5 feet kept ember-resistant, 5 to 30 feet lean, clean and green, and 30 to 100 feet with reduced fuel. On a Genoa lot that backs onto the slope, the uphill side is where we start. See defensible space in Genoa.

Does Genoa have old trees?

It has both ends. About 16% of Genoa homes were built before 1960, a far larger share than anywhere else in Carson Valley, while about 41% have been built since 2000 and the median year is 1996 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; a small community, so approximate).

Lots that old tend to carry the largest shade trees. Work on those is large tree removal, dead wooding and cabling and bracing, where the goal is often to keep a tree that defines the property. Newer homes on acreage more often need pruning, clearance and brush work. About 93% of homes are detached houses and about 90% of occupied homes are owner-occupied.

Is Genoa wetter than the rest of the valley?

The data says yes. A precipitation station about 4 miles away, on the west side of the valley 5 miles west of Gardnerville, averages 16.3 inches a year. The Minden station on the valley floor averages 9.34 inches (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Storms drop more against the mountain front than they do a few miles east.

The Minden station, about 5 miles away, records 21.8 inches of snow a year. The 2023 USDA map puts Genoa in hardiness zone 6b, with an average extreme winter low of minus 5 to 0 degrees. More moisture grows more brush as well as bigger trees, which is the other half of the fire picture.

What do we do on Genoa acreage?

The Genoa census area covers about 9 square miles, most of it large parcels. We clear overgrown fence lines, ditch banks and building sites with a brush mower, a masticating head, a backhoe and a skid steer. See lot clearing and brush mowing in Genoa and our comparison of mastication, brush mowing and hand clearing.

How far is your yard from Genoa?

About 20 miles, or about 27 minutes without traffic, from 6301 US Highway 50 East in Carson City.

What is defensible space on a Genoa hillside lot?

It is the managed area around the house: an ember-resistant strip in the first 5 feet, thinned and limbed-up vegetation out to 30 feet, and reduced fuel out to 100 feet where the lot allows. Those zones come from UNR Extension's Living With Fire guide.

Can an old shade tree in Genoa be saved instead of removed?

Sometimes. An arborist looks at the trunk, the root flare and the main unions, then recommends pruning, cabling or removal. We will not tell you a tree is safe, but we will tell you what we see and what the options are.

Do you clear brush on large Genoa parcels?

Yes, with our own brush mower and masticating head. The estimate is free and based on a site visit.
