What does an arborist look at?
A trained eye can find problems that are not obvious from the patio. Our arborists look for interior decay, cracks in the trunk, disease and insect infestation, and they look at where the tree stands and what it could hit.
- The crown: dead wood, thin foliage, dieback from the top
- The forks: tight unions, cracks, trapped bark
- The trunk: cavities, old wounds, fungus, bore holes and sawdust
- The base and roots: lifting soil, cut roots, decay at the root flare
- The site: irrigation, grade changes, pavement, buildings and wires
- The targets: what is under the tree if a part of it fails
What do you get at the end?
A recommendation you can understand. Staffed with two certified arborists, we give you a detailed tree care plan for your trees and shrubs, and every estimate is detailed and easily understood. If the answer is that the tree is fine and needs nothing this year, that is what you will hear.
Where work is recommended, the proposal says what, why and in what order. That might be pruning, dead wooding, cabling, a root barrier, defensible space work or removal.
Basic or in-depth: which do you need?
A basic consultation fits a home with one to a few trees of concern, and an in-depth consultation fits large lots, HOAs, commercial sites and properties before a sale or a build. The table below compares what you receive with each.
| Basic consultation | In-depth consultation | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical question | What should be done with this tree? | What is the plan for all the trees on this property? |
| Typical property | A home with one to a few trees of concern | Large lots, HOAs, commercial sites, properties before a sale or a build |
| What you receive | A recommendation and an estimate for the work | A personalized proposal and a tree and shrub care plan |

What is an ISA Certified Arborist?
The International Society of Arboriculture certifies individual arborists who pass its exam and keep up continuing education. The credential belongs to a person, not a company, and each one has a number. The certified arborist on our staff holds WE-11728A. The guide what is an ISA Certified Arborist, and how to verify one explains how to look a number up.
The Nevada State Contractors Board lists removal and trimming of trees and shrubs among the work that does not need a license from the board, so the ISA credential is the main qualification a homeowner can check. We also hold Nevada Business License # 20131580674 and are fully insured.
What about pests, diseases and permits?
We identify pests and diseases, tell you what they mean for the tree and say when pruning or removal is the answer. The pages in our tree guide show what we look for in each species. For Tahoe Basin properties, permits for live trees over 14 inches in diameter come from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency or the local fire district, and the agency decides. We can tell you which trees are likely to need one.

Arborist consultation questions
Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.
Is there a certified arborist near me?
Our arborists work from Carson City and cover Reno, Sparks, Carson Valley, Dayton, Fernley, Fallon and the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Each town page lists what we do there.
Does an arborist look at every job?
Yes. Our arborists are ISA certified and assess every job beforehand, including jobs that started as a simple request for a quote.
Can an arborist tell me if my tree is going to fall?
An arborist can tell you what defects the tree has and what they recommend. Nobody can promise a tree will stand. If a tree worries you, keep clear of it and have it looked at.
Do you consult for HOAs and commercial properties?
Yes. In-depth consultations and care plans are a good fit for properties with many trees and a budget to plan.
Can an arborist tell me what is wrong with my tree?
Usually, yes. Our arborists identify pests, diseases, decay and drought stress, explain what they mean for the tree and tell you when pruning or removal is the answer.
