Why fire history leads a Ruhenstroth visit

The NIFC perimeter history lists 24 fires of 300 acres or more since 1980 with centers within about 10 miles of Ruhenstroth, including the 2020 Numbers Fire (18,380 acres), the 1984 Indian Fire (17,771 acres) and the 2025 Conner Fire (17,714 acres). The Forest Service rates the community's wildfire risk to homes higher than 96.9% of US communities, with 30.7% of buildings in the direct exposure zone.

Those numbers are why the arborist looks past the tree itself: what is growing under it, how near the house it stands and whether dead material is in the crown.

Younger housing, planted trees

The median Ruhenstroth home dates from 1996, and about 44% were built in 2000 or later, against about 20% before 1980 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; small community, approximate). Planted landscape trees from those years are now big enough to need structure pruning, and windbreak rows are often overdue for a look.

Water, wind and cold

The Minden station, 6.4 miles away at 4,709 feet, records about 9.3 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). That is dry enough that the arborist asks first about irrigation. Winter lows of 0 to 5 degrees F in zone 7a are mild for the valley, but late cold snaps can still hit new growth.

Where Ruhenstroth sits

Ruhenstroth shares ZIP 89410 with Gardnerville, but sits farther out and higher, at about 4,935 feet against Gardnerville's 4,751. That difference in elevation and the open ground around the community are why we treat it as its own place in the data. The arborist works from the lot in front of them, and the proposal reflects the lot, not the ZIP code.
