Why a Crystal Bay homeowner calls an arborist first
Most calls here begin with a worry, not a work order: a big tree over a roof, a trunk with a crack, a lean that was not there last spring. A consultation answers the worry before anyone decides on a saw. The arborist walks the lot, looks at each tree you point to and tells you whether it needs pruning, support, a closer look later or removal.
About 59% of Crystal Bay homes were built before 1980, and the median home dates from 1972 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; a very small community, so treat these as approximate). Trees that were young when the cabins went in are now tall, and the roof is often within reach of the crown.
Tahoe rules the arborist checks before any plan
In the Lake Tahoe Basin a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, measured 4.5 feet up the trunk, needs a Tahoe Regional Planning Agency permit before removal. On lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. Taking branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree can need one too, with exceptions for dead wood, utility conflicts and trees near structures.
The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District covers Crystal Bay and issues defensible space tree permits after a property evaluation. The agency decides what is allowed. Our arborist can tell you which questions to ask and measure the trunks so you walk in prepared.
What does an arborist visit cover in Crystal Bay?
The arborist looks at the crown for dead wood and thin foliage, at the forks and trunk for cracks, cavities and bore holes, at the base for lifting soil or cut roots, and at the site for roofs, wires, decks and slopes. Then comes the part people value most: a plain answer, a personalized proposal for any work recommended, and a tree and shrub care plan if you want one.
If the answer is that a tree needs nothing this year, that is what you hear.
Fire and snow at 6,400 feet
The USDA Forest Service rates Crystal Bay's wildfire risk to homes higher than 92.9% of US communities, and 26.6% of its buildings sit in the direct exposure zone. The 2001 Martis Fire, mapped at 14,429 acres, had its center within about 10 miles. Dead branches, crowded crowns and low limbs are what an arborist flags first when fire season planning starts.
The Incline Village weather station, about 3.6 miles away at 6,356 feet, shows an average annual temperature of 46.0 degrees F (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). That is cold enough for winter loading on large limbs, which is one more reason to have weak unions and dead wood looked at before the first storm.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules
