When does a Zephyr Cove homeowner need an arborist?

Call before you decide, not after. A consultation fits when a tree is close to the house, when a limb is dead or cracked, when you are buying or selling and want an informed look at the lot, or when you are not sure whether a permit applies. The arborist can sort a tree that is fine from one that needs support or one that has to come down.

Median home age here is 1972, and about 73% of homes were built before 1980; only about 10% date from 2000 or later (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; small community, approximate).

Cabins and conifers

Many Zephyr Cove lots hold tall conifers that were standing before the house was framed. As they grow, crowns reach roofs, branches lean over decks and the root zone sits under driveways and patios. The arborist checks each of those contacts and says which ones are cosmetic and which ones need action.

Permits come before the saw

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need one, and some pruning of the upper two-thirds of a crown does, so ask before you cut. For fire-focused tree work, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates the property and issues defensible space tree permits.

Fire and winter on the east shore

The Forest Service rates Zephyr Cove's wildfire risk to homes higher than 98.0% of US communities, with 30.3% of buildings in the direct exposure zone. The 2007 Angora Fire, mapped at 3,070 acres, and the 1996 Autumn Hills Fire, at 3,805 acres, were both mapped within about 10 miles of town.

The Daggett Pass station, about 3.5 miles away, averages 21.8 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), enough snow load that arborists look hard at weak forks and heavy limbs over parking areas. Our office staffs the phone seven days a week, and 24-hour emergency service is available if a tree comes down.

Measuring aid

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.

Enter the measurement to see the diameter.

This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules
