Shade trees that outlived the plan

About 60% of Yerington homes were built before 1980 and the median year is 1976 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; approximate). Trees planted with those homes are 50 years old now. Old shade trees can hide trouble: cavities, fungus at the base, a lean that has crept in over years. The consultation is a look from the crown to the root flare, not a quick glance.

A weather station in town

The Yerington station is a mile from town at 4,380 feet. It records about 4.58 inches of precipitation, 3.2 inches of snowfall and an average temperature of 53.5 degrees F a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Rainfall alone cannot support a large shade tree, so how well it is watered is part of the diagnosis.

Lower fire rank, still worth a look

The Forest Service rates Yerington's wildfire risk to homes higher than 62.2% of US communities, with 9.2% of buildings in the direct exposure zone, and no fires of 300 acres or more since 1980 have centers within about 10 miles. That is lower than most of our towns. Dead wood and branches over roofs still matter for safety.

Reading an old tree

For a tree 50 years old or more, the arborist looks for dieback in the top, cracks at forks, cavities and fungus at the base, and roots cut by trenches or pavement over the years. Some old trees can be supported with cabling and bracing or lightened with careful pruning. Others are better removed. The visit tells you which.
