Certified arborist in South Reno, NV

A certified arborist in South Reno spends most visits on young trees: how they were planted, how they are growing and what to prune while they are small. Battle Born Tree Service has two ISA Certified Arborists on staff (credential WE-11728A), and ZIP 89521 is about 30 minutes from our yard without traffic.

Climber high in a large leafy tree

South Reno is mostly new. About three of every four homes in ZIP 89521 were built in 2000 or later, so the trees are young, planted by builders, and at the age when early decisions decide how they look at forty.

At a glance

  • ZIP 89521: about 76% of homes built in 2000 or later
  • Only about 9% built before 1980
  • About 30 minutes from our yard without traffic
  • Two ISA Certified Arborists, credential WE-11728A

Young trees need a different kind of visit

In ZIP 89521 the median home dates from 2007, and only about 9% of homes predate 1980 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; ZIP-wide figures). The trees are mostly 15 to 25 years old at most, not the aging giants of older parts of Reno.

That changes what the arborist looks for: a single strong central trunk, branch spacing, stakes or ties left on too long, and trunks with cinched or girdling roots at the base.

Structure pruning, not removal

The cheapest time to fix a tree is early. Branches with tight, bark-pinched unions tend to split as they grow, and a few well-chosen cuts while the tree is small can prevent a large failure later. An arborist plans those cuts and explains what each one is for.

We do not top trees. Topping is not pruning, and our guide explains the damage it causes.

Soil, water and wind on the south side

ZIP 89521 sits at about 4,500 feet in hardiness zone 7a (minimum winter temperature about 0 to 5 degrees). The Reno 6.8 SE station, 4.6 miles away, averages about 9.9 inches of precipitation a year, and the Reno-Tahoe airport station about 20.9 inches of snow (NOAA 1991-2020 normals).

Wind and low rainfall make irrigation a big factor for young trees. Our watering guide covers high-desert basics.

Wildfire context

ZIP 89521 has no USFS record of its own, so the county figure applies: Washoe County rates higher than 97.2% of US communities for wildfire risk to homes. The 2024 Davis Fire, mapped at 5,824 acres, has its center about 7.5 miles from the neighborhood point (NIFC).

Ask for a look at any evergreens close to the house, and at ornamental junipers if you have them.

Do I need a Reno permit to prune a tree on my own lot?

There is no City of Reno permit for pruning or removing a tree on private property. In the City right-of-way, a Tree Work Permit and a Certified Arborist are required. Your homeowner association may add its own rules.

Should I prune a new subdivision tree myself?

Small corrective cuts are common, but a consultation tells you which cuts matter. We do not give climbing or chainsaw instructions.

Do builder-planted trees often have problems?

We do not make claims about builders. The arborist checks each tree for the usual issues in young trees: planting depth, ties, trunk shape and branch unions.
