Fire exposure is the headline number
The USDA Forest Service puts 98.9% of Glenbrook's buildings in the direct wildfire exposure zone and rates its wildfire risk to homes higher than 97.6% of US communities. That is among the highest figures in our whole service area, and it is why many Glenbrook consultations end with a defensible space plan rather than a removal.
The arborist reads the lot in zones: bare and ember-resistant against the house (Zone 0, 0 to 5 feet), lean and clean out to 30 feet (Zone 1), then reduced fuel out to 100 feet (Zone 2), following the University of Nevada, Reno Extension guide Living With Fire. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates properties and issues defensible space tree permits here.
Newer homes, older trees
Only about 15% of Glenbrook homes were built before 1980; the median home dates from 1986 and about 20% went up in 2000 or later (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; small place, approximate). So the houses are not the oldest on the lake, but the pines and firs around them often predate them by decades.
That mismatch is common on infill lots: a modern roof, a deck or a fence line built close to a big trunk. An arborist looks at how the structure and the tree are now sharing space and whether pruning, support or removal makes sense.
Lakeshore trees and TRPA
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit for a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, and over 6 inches for trees between a house and the lake on lakeshore lots. A dead tree that could fall on a house needs no TRPA permit. The agency decides, and the arborist measures so you can ask the right question first.
What does a Glenbrook consultation give you?
A walk of the property with a certified arborist, a look at each tree of concern, straight answers and a personalized proposal for any work recommended. ISA Certified Arborist WE-11728A is on staff, and every estimate is detailed and easy to follow.
The Glenbrook weather station, under a mile from town at 6,350 feet, averages about 18.5 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Winter loading on big crowns is part of the picture whenever the arborist looks at a tight fork or a long, heavy limb.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules
