Young landscapes in a desert climate

The Fernley 2.6 WNW station, six-tenths of a mile from town at 4,170 feet, averages 7.61 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). The median Fernley home dates from 2001 and only about 14% were built before 1980 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024). Trees planted with those houses have lived their whole lives on irrigation, so root zones are shallow and sensitive to missed watering and soil that stays wet or dry too long.

The consultation reads canopy density, color and dieback and then follows them down to the base.

Fire context

The Forest Service rates Fernley's wildfire risk to homes higher than 89.2% of US communities, with 11.7% of buildings in the direct exposure zone. The 2011 Nixon Fire (11,195 acres) and the 2000 Ramsey Fire (7,621 acres) were both mapped within about 10 miles. Grass and brush, not trees, carry most fire risk here, and the arborist keeps that in mind when judging what to prune.

Basic or in-depth in Fernley

Larger sites such as HOAs and commercial lots often ask for an in-depth consultation. It covers all the trees on a property rather than one or two, and ends with a personalized proposal and a tree and shrub care plan. For one tree, a basic consultation is the right size.
