Fire protection districts in our service area
Eight fire agencies cover the Nevada towns we serve: North Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Douglas, East Fork, Truckee Meadows, Carson City Fire Department, Central Lyon County, North Lyon County and Storey County. Each sets its own defensible space expectations, and your district is the first place to ask before big tree or brush work.

A fire district is the local agency that fights fires, inspects defensible space and, in the Tahoe Basin, can issue the tree permit. The pages below say what each district publishes, the fire-risk data for its towns and what we do there. Programs change by year, so every page is dated.
Which district am I in?
The state's Fire Adapted Nevada contacts page points owners to their local fire agency and links the Living With Fire tool for finding your fire district. Reno and Sparks have their own city fire departments, and the contacts page lists separate inspection contacts for each. If your address is inside a city, ask the city fire department.
The districts here are North Lake Tahoe (Incline Village, Crystal Bay), Tahoe Douglas (Glenbrook, Zephyr Cove, Stateline, Kingsbury), East Fork (Minden, Gardnerville, Genoa and the rest of Carson Valley), Truckee Meadows (unincorporated Washoe County), Carson City Fire Department (the city), Central Lyon County (Dayton and neighbors), North Lyon County (Fernley) and Storey County (Virginia City).
What do districts decide that affects trees?
Districts set defensible space distances and inspections. In the Tahoe Basin the fire protection districts can also issue defensible-space tree permits, while TRPA handles the basin's other tree rules. Elsewhere in our area we have not found a private-property tree permit, but districts and counties set rules for rights-of-way and special areas. See permits in Northern Nevada and free defensible space evaluations and chipping programs.
How do I use these pages?
Open your district, read what it published and the fire-risk data for your town, then call the district for current terms. When you want the work done, call us at 775.232.8243 for a free estimate. A certified arborist assesses every job before work begins, and we do defensible space and fire mitigation, lot clearing, brush mowing, masticating and removal of dead and hazardous trees. We do not replace the district's inspection or approvals.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.
Do I need my fire district's approval before cutting trees?
In the Tahoe Basin, the fire district can issue the defensible-space tree permit. Elsewhere we found no private-tree permit, but ask the district about your lot.
Are the inspections free?
Some districts say so for current owners and others do not publish terms. Each district page says what we read.
Why is a district missing for Reno or Sparks?
Those cities run their own fire departments. See the Fire Adapted Nevada contacts page.
How current are these pages?
Each is dated with the day we read the district's site. Programs change, so confirm with the district.
