What the district offers residents
- Burn permits
- The district sells residential, agricultural and commercial burn permits online and in person, and states that permits are for the 89408 area only. Residential permits cover burning tree trimmings, tumbleweeds and leaves.
- Fire prevention services
- The site lists preparedness training, fire extinguisher service and evacuation consultations.
- Defensible space
- We did not find a residential defensible space, inspection or chipping program on the district's site on the day we read it. Fire Adapted Nevada's contacts page says owners in areas it does not list should email the state's Fire Adapted Nevada coordinator.
- Area served
- Lyon County's fire department page says the district provides services to the City of Fernley and surrounding area.

Fernley is a flat, fast-growing valley city, and its fire profile differs from the Sierra front. This page says plainly what the district publishes and fills in the rest from public data.
What do the numbers say for Fernley?
The USFS Wildfire Risk to Communities data rates Fernley's risk to homes higher than 89.2 percent of US communities, with 11.7 percent of its 8,821 buildings in the direct-exposure zone. Median year built is about 2001, and 14.1 percent of homes were built before 1980.
Mapped fires of 300 acres or more with centers within about 10 miles are fewer here than in the mountain towns: Nixon (2011, 11,195 acres), Ramsey (2000, 7,621 acres), Virginia (2006, 4,602 acres) and Little Valley (2008, 562 acres). Those are mapped acres only.
What matters for a Fernley yard?
Grass, weeds and brush carry fire across flat ground, so the Living With Fire zones still apply: keep the first 5 feet next to the house free of burnables, keep the next 25 feet lean, clean and green, and reduce fuels beyond that. See Fernley and what is defensible space.
Nevada law does not set one distance for defensible space. Ask the district what it expects for your parcel.
