What the district offers residents
- Defensible space inspections
- The Nevada Division of Forestry's Fire Adapted Nevada contacts page lists the East Fork Fire Protection District for Douglas County and asks owners to email the district with "Defensible Space Inspection Request" in the subject line. We did not find an inspection page on the district's own site.
- Wildfire and fuels
- The district's site has a Wildfire & Fuels section and a Genoa Peak Fire & Fuels page, which describes providing defensible space and fuels reduction in and around Douglas County and surrounding areas. It does not say how a resident requests that service.
- Burn permits
- The district says a permit is required for all open-flame burns, is issued for one year and must be renewed annually. Recreational and ceremonial burn permits are applied for online through Community Connect, and agricultural burn permits are obtained in person at the district office.
- Living With Fire
- The district's fire prevention page links the Living With Fire program, the University of Nevada, Reno Extension's wildfire resource for homeowners.

Genoa is the clearest example in the data. Here is what East Fork publishes, and where its pages are thin.
How does tree work fit in the valley?
Douglas County outside the Tahoe Basin has no TRPA rule, and we have not found a private-property tree removal permit in the valley towns. Check with the district and the county before work in a right-of-way or special area, and with your HOA if you have one. Defensible space expectations come from the Living With Fire guide and from the district, which does not publish a single distance on the pages we read.
The Living With Fire zones are the common reference: 0 to 5 feet ember-resistant, 5 to 30 feet lean, clean and green, and 30 to 100 feet or more reduced fuel. Nevada law does not set a single distance. See what is defensible space.
What do the numbers say for the valley?
USFS Wildfire Risk to Communities rates Genoa's risk to homes higher than 97.4 percent of US communities, with 75.4 percent of its 922 buildings in the direct-exposure zone. Johnson Lane is 98.3 percent, Topaz Ranch Estates 98.0 percent (53.6 percent directly exposed), Indian Hills 96.9 percent and Ruhenstroth 96.9 percent. Minden is 91.3 percent and Gardnerville 89.6 percent, with 10.7 and 5.1 percent of buildings directly exposed.
Mapped fires of 300 acres or more with centers within about 10 miles include Numbers (2020, 18,380 acres) and Indian (1984, 17,771 acres) near Gardnerville Ranchos, Conner (2025, 17,714 acres) near Ruhenstroth, and Waterfall (2004, 8,765 acres) near Johnson Lane and Indian Hills. Those are mapped acres only.
What does Battle Born do in the valley?
We do defensible space and fire mitigation, lot clearing, brush mowing, masticating and removal of dead or hazardous trees, with a certified arborist assessing the job first. Larger valley parcels suit mowing and mastication; see mastication vs brush mowing vs hand clearing and lot clearing before building. Minden is about 26 minutes from our yard without traffic and Genoa about 27. Call 775.232.8243 for a free estimate.
