These are the questions people ask before they have a tree taken down. If yours is not here, call the office. The phone line is staffed seven days a week.

How do I know if a tree needs to be removed?

Only a person standing at the tree can tell you, which is why the estimate visit comes first. An arborist looks at dead branches, cracks, decay at the base, a lean that has changed and soil lifting around the roots. One sign rarely settles it. Many trees with dead limbs only need pruning, and some trees that look fine have problems inside. Our estimate is free, and a certified arborist makes the assessment. Our guides on dead or dying trees and warning signs before a tree fails list what to look for.

Do you remove small trees or only large ones?

Both. Small and large tree removal is on our service list, and large trees have their own page because the equipment and planning are different. A small tree in an open yard may need a crew and a chipper. A large tree beside a house may need a boom truck or a crane. Tell the office what is growing where, and the arborist will plan the method at the visit. See tree removal and large tree removal for the details of each.

What does the estimate cover?

Every estimate is detailed and written so it is easy to understand. It is tailored to you and your property. If you want the stump ground, the wood left in place or hauled away, or the brush chipped, say so at the visit and it is written into the estimate. Ask for anything you are unsure about before you agree to the work. Our guide to reading a tree service estimate explains the usual line items so you know what to look for.

Is stump grinding included in a tree removal?

It depends on the job, because all of our estimates are tailored to each client and their needs. Some people want the stump gone right away, and others plan to deal with it later or leave it. Tell the arborist what you want at the visit so the estimate matches. Stump grinding is also a separate service, so you can add it afterward. Calling 811 first is standard practice for any grinding below grade, and we cover that on the stump grinding questions page.

Can you remove a tree that is over my house or near power lines?

Yes, trees close to buildings are some of the jobs our equipment is for. Our crane and 75-foot boom truck let a crew take a tree down in controlled pieces instead of dropping it. Wires are different. NV Energy handles its own lines, and anyone unqualified must stay at least 10 feet from lines up to 50 kV. If a line is touching or tangled in the tree, stay away and call NV Energy first. Read about crane-assisted removal and our power line guide.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree?

It depends on where the tree is. In Reno, trees on private property do not need a permit, but a Tree Work Permit is required in City right-of-way and a Certified Arborist must do that work. For Carson City, check with Carson City Public Works about any tree in the right-of-way. In the Lake Tahoe Basin, TRPA has diameter rules. The agency for your address makes the final call. Our permit guide and the permits questions page have the sources.

What happens to the wood, branches and chips?

That is part of the conversation at the estimate. You can ask for the wood to stay, be hauled off or be chipped, and the estimate is written to match. Battle Born Tree Service also sells firewood and wood chips, so call the office about availability and pricing for those. We have not published terms for delivery, so ask when you call. Our guide on what happens to the wood and chips covers the common choices.

Can I get a price over the phone?

No. Every tree and every site is different. The arborist needs to see the tree, what is near it, whether the ground can hold equipment and how a crew can get in and out. A number given without that would be a guess. Call 775.232.8243 or send the estimate form, and you can attach up to five photos to help the office understand the job. The estimate itself is free.

What equipment do you bring to a removal?

It depends on the tree and the site. We own a crane, a 75-foot Altec GMC boom truck, a 2017 Ford F550 utility and chip truck, a 2014 Bobcat T870 track loader, a chipper, dump trucks, a backhoe and skid steer. The arborist chooses what fits the job when writing the estimate. Our site describes the crew as among the best-equipped in Northern Nevada. See the full list on the equipment page.

Who does the work?

Our crew is eight people: two ISA Certified Arborists and six tree removal experts. The ISA credential is held by the people, ISA Certified Arborist WE-11728A is on staff, and a certified arborist assesses every job before work begins. We are licensed and fully insured, and our Nevada Business License number is 20131580674. Ask the office what documents you want for your records. Our guide to proof of insurance lists what to request from any tree service.
