Distances are measured to the center of each mapped perimeter, so they show how often large fires start in this part of Douglas County, not how near the flames came to any house. The Forest Service ranks Ruhenstroth's risk to homes higher than about 97% of US communities, with about 31% of buildings in the direct exposure zone and the rest in the indirect zone.

Which trees does that put on the removal list?

Start with anything dead. A standing dead tree dries out completely and will burn readily. Next are trees whose crowns touch the house or overhang the roof, and small trees growing up under larger ones, which carry a ground fire into the canopy. Our guide on ladder fuels and limbing up explains that last point.

Where a lot backs onto native pinyon and juniper, the question is how many to keep and how far apart. Junipers in particular burn hot. Our pages on junipers and single-leaf pinyon describe both trees. Removal is not the answer for every tree: spacing and pruning do part of the work, and the arborist will separate the two on the estimate.

What about ordinary yard trees?

They get old here like anywhere else. The median Ruhenstroth home dates from 1996 and about 20% predate 1980 (American Community Survey; a small community, so the figures are approximate). A shade tree planted with a 1970s house is now a large tree, and one planted in 2000 has reached the roof. Split trunks, decay at the base and limbs over the house are the usual reasons for a call.

How is the work done?

A certified arborist assesses every job before work begins. Depending on the tree and the access, the crew climbs it, works from the 75-foot boom truck, or brings the crane. Brush is chipped and wood is hauled away unless you ask to keep it. For brush and small trees across a whole parcel, see lot clearing and brush mowing in Ruhenstroth, which uses the brush mower and masticating head and not a saw crew.

When is the right time?

Before fire season is better than during it. A dead tree does not improve by waiting, and it becomes harder to climb as it dries. If you can see one from your window, ask for the free estimate now.
