Tree removal in Zephyr Cove, NV
Tree removal in Zephyr Cove, NV usually means taking a tall conifer away from a cabin that was built beside it fifty or more years ago. Battle Born Tree Service handles the removal with a climber, a boom truck or a crane, and a Tahoe Regional Planning Agency permit is needed first when a live trunk measures over 14 inches across.

About 73% of Zephyr Cove's homes were built before 1980 and a third before 1960, the highest pre-1980 share of any Lake Tahoe community we serve. The Census Bureau also counts more housing units here (about 680) than year-round residents (about 560), so many owners see their trees only a few times a year.

I only visit a few times a year. What should I look for?
A tree can change a lot between one visit and the next. When you open the cabin, walk the lot and look up before you look at anything else.
- A conifer whose needles have gone red or brown since your last visit
- A top that has snapped out, or a large limb hung up in another tree
- Fresh cracks in the soil or lifted ground on one side of a trunk
- A trunk that leans more than you remember, especially toward the roof
- Pitch tubes or sawdust on the bark of a pine
None of these tells you what the tree will do. Each is a reason to have a certified arborist look at it. Our guide on how to tell if a tree is dead or dying goes through the signs, and bark beetles in pines covers a common cause in Sierra pines.
Does a dead tree need a permit in Zephyr Cove?
Under Tahoe Regional Planning Agency rules, a dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a permit. A live tree does once it is over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, or over 6 inches if it stands between a lakeshore house and the lake.
The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates properties on this shore and issues tree permits for defensible space work. The agencies decide what may be cut. If you are away, it helps to settle the permit by phone before the crew is scheduled, so the work is not waiting on paper.
How is an old cabin lot worked?
Lots laid out in the 1950s and 1960s were not planned around trucks. The certified arborist who writes your estimate checks the driveway, the overhead service wire and the distance to the neighbor's roof. From that comes the method: a climber lowering pieces on ropes, the 75-foot Altec boom truck from the road, or the crane lifting sections over the building.
You do not have to be there on the day. Tell the office how to reach you, and what you want done with the stump, before the work date.
What do the fire numbers say?
The Forest Service ranks Zephyr Cove's risk to homes higher than 98% of US communities and about 80% of Nevada communities, with about 30% of buildings in the direct exposure zone. The 2002 Gondola Fire, mapped at 643 acres, had its center about 4 miles away. A standing dead tree beside an unoccupied cabin is a fall hazard and fuel at once, which is a good reason to pair removal with defensible space work.
Winter access
The nearest NOAA station with 1991-2020 normals is Daggett Pass, about 3.5 miles away and roughly 1,100 feet higher than Zephyr Cove, where precipitation averages about 21.8 inches a year. Expect less at lake level, but most of it still arrives as winter snow. Planned removals are easier to schedule once driveways are clear. A tree that falls in a storm is different: our emergency line is answered 24 hours a day.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules
