Tree trimming and pruning in Zephyr Cove, NV
Tree trimming in Zephyr Cove is mostly about cabins and the trees leaning over them: about 73% of homes here were built before 1980 and a third before 1960. Battle Born Tree Service clears limbs from roofs, chimneys and decks, pruning the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency allows without a permit when the branch is within 10 feet of the structure.

Zephyr Cove sits on US Highway 50 on the lake's southeast shore, at about 6,258 feet. It is an old summer community. The Census Bureau counts about 680 housing units and about 280 year-round households, so many of the cabins are closed up for part of the year while the trees above them keep growing.

- About 73% of homes built before 1980, a third before 1960
- Branches within 10 feet of a building, deck or chimney: no TRPA trimming permit
- Wildfire risk to homes higher than 98% of US communities

What is the 10-foot exception?
TRPA's rule on substantial trimming says a permit is required to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, unless the branch is within 10 feet of a chimney outlet, a building or a deck. Dead branches are also exempt, and so are branches rubbing or pulling on utility lines inside the property, though TRPA says to consult the power company first.
For an old cabin under old trees, that exception covers most of what needs doing. A limb lying on shingles, needles piling against a stovepipe, a branch scraping the deck rail: all of it is within 10 feet.
Why do older cabins need it most?
The median Zephyr Cove home dates from 1972 (Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024, approximate for a place of about 560 people). A cabin from that era has had fifty years of trees growing toward it. Roofs suffer first. Branches rub the surface in wind, hold snow against it in winter and drop needles into valleys and gutters all year.
The same needles are fuel. The USDA Forest Service rates the wildfire risk to homes in Zephyr Cove higher than 98% of US communities. University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Living With Fire guide starts with an ember-resistant zone in the first 0 to 5 feet around a house, and a clean roof is part of it.
Snow load on long limbs
The nearest station with precipitation normals is Daggett Pass, 3.5 miles away and about 1,075 feet higher, which averages 21.8 inches a year. Zephyr Cove is lower and somewhat drier, but winter still arrives as heavy snow. Long horizontal limbs over a roof carry that weight. Shortening one back to a side branch, a reduction cut, lowers the load without changing the shape of the tree. More in storm and snow-load breakage.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules

Can branches touching my cabin roof be cut without a permit?
TRPA's published rule exempts branches within 10 feet of a building, deck or chimney outlet from the trimming permit. The agency decides in any unusual case.
What if the branch is near the power line to my cabin?
Do not touch it. TRPA says to consult your power company before removing branches near utility lines. See our guide to trees and power lines.
