At a glance
- Median age about 66, median home built in 1973
- 18.46 inches of precipitation a year at Glenbrook, 3.7 miles away
- Hardiness zone 6b on the 2023 USDA map
- TRPA rule for upper two-thirds branch removal
What does an older owner need to know?
Three things: the arborist can do the climbing, the estimate is free, and a trimming job at Tahoe may need a TRPA check. TRPA requires a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. We tell you which category the work falls in; the agency decides.
Median age in the community is about 66 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024, Skyland CDP), and the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District can evaluate a property too.
What does the weather record show?
The Glenbrook gauge, 3.7 miles away at 6,350 feet, averages 18.46 inches of precipitation a year and a 46.0-degree mean temperature (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). It has no snowfall normal. Tahoe City, across the lake in California, records 179.0 inches, a reference for the lake's snowy shore and not a Skyland figure.
In heavy snow years limbs break. Removing dead wood and lightening long limbs before winter helps; see heavy snow and broken limbs.
Pruning near the house
Branches over the roof, chimney and deck come first, then low limbs on conifers. About 65% of Skyland's buildings are in the direct wildfire zone, so the same cuts do double duty; see defensible space in Skyland.

Rules here
This community is inside the Tahoe Basin, where the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. On lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for live trees between the house and the lake. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit.
TRPA also asks for a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates defensible space and can issue the fire-safety tree permit. The agency decides.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules
