Tree trimming and pruning in Round Hill Village, NV

Trimming in Round Hill Village has one special rule: TRPA requires a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. Round Hill is outside the towns named on our site; call 775.232.8243 to confirm.

At 6,473 feet, trimming is as much about snow as about shape. Heavy loads, long limbs and a rule about how much can come off.

At a glance

  • 21.8 inches of precipitation a year at Daggett Pass, 2.9 miles away
  • Hardiness zone 6b on the 2023 USDA map
  • TRPA permit for upper two-thirds branch removal
  • About 7% of homes built since 2000

What is the upper two-thirds rule?

TRPA requires a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. In practice that means light thinning or dead-wood removal usually comes under an exception, while heavy crown work needs a check first. The agency decides; see the Tahoe permit guide.

Dead and hazardous wood is the simplest category; see dead wooding.

How does snow load shape the work?

The Daggett Pass gauge, 2.9 miles away and about 860 feet higher, averages 21.8 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). That station has no snowfall normal we can quote; Tahoe City, across the lake in California, records 179.0 inches, a reference for a snowy lake shore and not a Round Hill figure.

Wet snow weighs most on long horizontal limbs and tight forks. Thinning the ends and removing weak unions before winter is easier on the tree. See heavy snow and broken limbs.

Conifers and timing

Most conifers are best pruned in early spring and summer, deciduous trees in late winter, and hazards any time. For the Tahoe Basin the sequence is: estimate, permit check, then work.

Second homes

With 802 housing units for 352 households (ACS 2020-2024), some owners are probably away. An arborist can look at the trees while you are away if you arrange access; see vacation home tree care at Lake Tahoe. Round Hill Village is not among the towns named on our site, so call 775.232.8243 to confirm; it is about 44 minutes from the yard.

Rules here

This community is inside the Tahoe Basin, where the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height, measured 4.5 feet above the ground. On lakeshore lots the threshold is 6 inches for live trees between the house and the lake. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit.

TRPA also asks for a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree, with exceptions for limbs near structures, utility conflicts and dead wood. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates defensible space and can issue the fire-safety tree permit. The agency decides.

Measuring aid

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree

In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.

Enter the measurement to see the diameter.

This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules
