Glenbrook is on Tahoe's east shore, down off US Highway 50 below Spooner Summit. It is the Tahoe community nearest our yard. About 320 homes are set in forest that runs to the edge of nearly every lot, and the trees are the reason people live there.
At a glance
- About 99% of buildings in the direct wildfire exposure zone
- Limbing up the lower third is outside TRPA's trimming permit rule as published
- Glenbrook station: about 18.5 inches of precipitation a year

What does direct exposure mean for the trees by a house?
In the Forest Service's Wildfire Risk to Communities data, a building in the direct exposure zone stands where wildland vegetation can carry fire right up to it. In Glenbrook that describes 98.9% of buildings, the highest share of any community in our service area. The overall risk to homes is rated higher than 97.6% of US communities.
A fire on the ground reaches a tree's crown by climbing: grass to shrub, shrub to low limb, low limb to canopy. Pruning breaks that chain. Low branches are removed so there is open space between the ground and the first limbs, and dead wood is taken out of the crown. Read more in ladder fuels and limbing up.
Does limbing up need a permit at Tahoe?
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's trimming rule applies to branches in the upper two-thirds of a tree's height. Raising the lower third, removing dead branches and clearing limbs within 10 feet of a building, deck or chimney outlet are not covered by that permit requirement as TRPA publishes it.
Anything that goes further, such as thinning live branches high in the crown, needs a permit. The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District evaluates properties for defensible space and issues tree permits for that work. The agency decides, so it is worth a call before work is booked. Our Glenbrook defensible space page has more.
Newer homes in an old forest
Glenbrook's housing is newer than most of the lake's: a median year built of 1986, and only about 15% of homes older than 1980 (Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024, a very small sample). The houses were fitted in among standing trees, so branches over roofs and against eaves are common. Clearing those is routine pruning.
Weather at the Glenbrook station
Glenbrook has its own long-running weather station, less than a mile from the center of the community. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for it show 18.46 inches of precipitation a year and a mean temperature of 46.0 degrees, with summer highs averaging 74. That is about twice the moisture Carson City gets, 20 miles away.
We prune most conifers in early spring and summer. Dead and hazardous limbs are removed in any month.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules

Tree trimming and pruning questions in Glenbrook
Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.
How high should trees be limbed up in Glenbrook?
It depends on the tree's height and the slope. The fire district's evaluation and the Living With Fire guide give the targets, and the arborist sets the cuts tree by tree.
Will pruning for fire spoil the look of the trees?
It should not. Raising the crown and removing dead wood keep a tree's natural shape. We do not top trees.
Does my association have its own tree rules?
It may. If your home is in an association, ask it before work starts. TRPA and fire district rules apply either way.
How close is Glenbrook to your yard?
About 21 miles, or about 31 minutes without traffic, over Spooner Summit on US Highway 50.
