Tree trimming and pruning in Incline Village, NV
Tree trimming in Incline Village comes with a rule most of Nevada does not have: the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires a permit to remove branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree's height, with exceptions for dead branches and for limbs close to a building. Battle Born Tree Service prunes in Incline with an ISA Certified Arborist planning every cut around that rule.

Incline Village is the largest community on Tahoe's Nevada shore, at about 6,437 feet, and it lies inside the Tahoe Basin, where trees are regulated as part of the lake's watershed. Pruning is still allowed and still needed. The question is which cuts need paper first.

Which pruning needs a TRPA permit?
Per the table, pruning live branches in the upper two-thirds of a tree's height needs a TRPA permit. Dead branches, branches within 10 feet of a chimney outlet, building or deck, and branches rubbing a utility line inside your property do not.
| The branch | TRPA permit? |
|---|---|
| Live, in the upper two-thirds of the tree's height | Yes |
| Dead, anywhere on the tree | No |
| Within 10 feet of a chimney outlet, building or deck | No |
| Rubbing or pulling on a utility line inside your property | No, but consult your power company first |
That is the rule as TRPA publishes it. Trees in a stream zone or on the backshore, and trees kept as a condition of an earlier permit, have their own limits. The agency decides. Our arborist can tell you which of your planned cuts fall on which side of the line and what to ask.
What is the work, once the rule is clear?
A great deal of useful pruning in Incline needs no permit at all. Dead wood can come out of the whole crown. Limbs can be cleared back from the roof, the deck and the chimney. Lower limbs can be raised, which is also the pruning that matters for fire: the USDA Forest Service puts about 61% of Incline Village buildings in the direct wildfire exposure zone.
The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District evaluates properties for defensible space and issues tree permits for that work. See our Incline Village defensible space page.
Pruning a home you are not living in
The Census Bureau counts about 7,800 housing units in Incline Village and about 4,000 occupied households (ACS 2020-2024). A lot of homes stand empty for part of the year, and a broken top or a limb resting on a roof can go unnoticed for months.
Our estimates are detailed and written to be easy to understand, with each tree listed, so an owner who is not on site can see exactly what is proposed. The office line is answered seven days a week.
Cold site, heavy snow, short season
The Incline Village weather station records a mean annual temperature of 46.0 degrees, and the village is in USDA hardiness zone 6b. There is no snowfall normal for the Nevada shore; across the lake, Tahoe City averages 179 inches a year. Snow load is the main reason limbs fail here. Reduction cuts on long, heavy limbs and removal of dead wood before winter are how pruning helps. Conifers are generally pruned in early spring and summer.

Tahoe tree permit check: measure your tree
In the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) requires a permit to remove a live tree over 14 inches in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up the trunk). On lakeshore lots the limit is 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake. Wrap a tape around the trunk at 4.5 feet and enter the number.
Enter the measurement to see the diameter.
This is a measuring aid, not a ruling. TRPA and your fire protection district decide. A dead tree that could fall on a house does not need a TRPA permit. TRPA tree rules

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.
Do I need a permit to trim a tree in Incline Village?
For live branches in the upper two-thirds of the tree, yes, from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. Dead branches and branches within 10 feet of a building, deck or chimney outlet are exceptions. The agency decides.
Can you prune while I am away from my Incline home?
The arborist needs access to see the trees. Call the office to arrange the estimate, and you will have a written plan to review before any work is scheduled.
Can dead branches be removed without TRPA approval?
TRPA's published rule lists dead branches as an exception to the trimming permit. So dead wood can usually come out without that permit; ask TRPA if you are unsure.
