Stump grinding in Washoe Valley, NV

Stump grinding in Washoe Valley covers more than cut stumps: wind and fire also leave tipped-up root plates and burned stubs, and those need a loader or a backhoe as much as a grinder. Battle Born Tree Service owns all of that equipment and is about 25 minutes away without traffic, the shortest drive we have to any Washoe County community.

Washoe Valley lies between Carson City and Reno at about 5,100 feet, with the Carson Range on one side and the lake on the other. About 53% of its homes were built before 1980 and about 93% are owner-occupied (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024; a small place, so treat the figures as approximate).

At a glance

  • About 15 miles and 25 minutes from our yard without traffic
  • About 94% of buildings in the direct wildfire exposure zone
  • Root plates and burned stumps handled with our own machines
  • About 53% of homes built before 1980

What is a root plate, and can it be ground?

When wind pushes a whole tree over, the roots lift out of the ground in a disc of wood, soil and rock that can stand taller than a person. After the trunk is cut away, that disc is what is left. It is not a job for a grinder alone. The soil and rock packed into it would wreck the teeth.

The usual approach is to deal with the plate by machine, then grind what remains at ground level if needed. Battle Born Tree Service owns a Bobcat T870 track loader, a backhoe and a skid steer for that work. One warning: a cut root plate can drop back into its hole without notice. Keep people and pets away from it until it has been dealt with. If a tree has just come down, see emergency tree service in Washoe Valley.

Stumps after a fire

The USDA Forest Service places about 94% of Washoe Valley's buildings in the direct wildfire exposure zone, the highest share of any community on our Reno-area list. The 2024 Davis Fire, mapped at 5,824 acres, and the 2011 Washoe Drive Fire, mapped at 3,178 acres, both have their centers within about 4 miles in the federal record.

A burned tree that has been cut leaves a charred stump, sometimes hollowed below ground where the roots burned out. That hollow is a hazard to walk or drive over. Tell the office if a stump is from a burned tree so the arborist knows to check the ground around it.

Ordinary stumps on older lots

Most stumps here are the plain kind: a tree was cut and the stump stayed. With half the homes dating from before 1980, many are wide. Grinding takes the stump out so you can plant grass, shrubs or a new tree. On lots with a well and septic system, show us where the lines and the leach field run. Utilities mark only their own lines after an 811 request, made a few business days ahead.

Wind is the reason to think ahead

Washoe Valley is known for its wind, and our guide to the Washoe Zephyr and downslope winds explains how to prepare trees for it. On a stump page the point is simpler: when you replace a tree that blew over, think about what stood there and why it went. The arborist can talk that through when looking at the stump.

Close enough for the heavy equipment

Fifteen miles is a short move for a loader on a trailer. That matters when the job is a row of root plates along a fence or stumps scattered across a few acres. Grinding, machine work and lot clearing in Washoe Valley can all be listed on one free estimate.
