Is an old stump really a fire problem?
On its own, a low stump out in bare dirt is not much of one. The trouble is where stumps tend to be and what collects around them. A stump beside a shed, under a deck edge or against a fence gathers leaves and weeds, dries to tinder and sits where embers land.
The Forest Service places about 45% of Lemmon Valley's buildings in the direct exposure zone, next to wildland vegetation. The 2020 Poeville Road Fire, mapped at 2,973 acres, and the 1999 Reservoir Fire, mapped at 6,163 acres, both have their centers within about 4 miles in the federal record. Clearing dead wood near buildings, stumps included, is basic defensible space work in Lemmon Valley.
Where should the grindings go?
Not next to the house. University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Living With Fire guide sets out three zones: 0 to 5 feet from the home is ember-resistant, 5 to 30 feet is lean, clean and green, and 30 to 100 feet is reduced fuel. A thick layer of fresh wood grindings does not fit the first of those.
Grindings from a stump near a building should be hauled. Farther out, a thin layer can stay where the stump was. Tell us which you want and the estimate will say so.
| Distance from the house | Living With Fire zone | Grindings |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 5 feet | Zone 0, ember-resistant | Haul away |
| 5 to 30 feet | Zone 1, lean, clean and green | Haul, or spread thin |
| 30 to 100 feet | Zone 2, reduced fuel | Can stay, spread thin |
Stumps from trees you cut yourself
About 9% of Lemmon Valley households heat mainly with wood, far above the Washoe County share of about 1%. People who cut their own dead trees for the stove are left with the part a chainsaw cannot deal with. We grind stumps we did not cut. Count them, measure the widest, and send a photo.
Full-size stumps on established lots
A tree that has stood since the 1970s leaves a stump with a wide flare and thick surface roots. Decide whether you want only the stump gone or the surface roots too. On lots with a septic system, show us where the tank and the leach field are before any machine comes in. An 811 request has utilities mark their own lines, and is made a few business days ahead, but a private septic system is not on anyone's map except yours.
Add it to bigger work
If the tree is still standing, stump grinding can go on the same estimate as the tree removal in Lemmon Valley. If you are clearing brush as well, one visit can cover both. All estimates are tailored to each client and their needs.
