Verdi is a small river community at the foot of the Sierra, about 1,000 people at roughly 4,900 feet where the Truckee River leaves the canyon. About 13% of its homes were built before 1960, so old trees and old stumps are part of the picture.

Why do stumps sprout so readily here?
Water. Cottonwoods, willows, poplars and aspens are trees of wet ground, and all of them answer cutting by sending up shoots from the stump and the roots. On a dry lot the regrowth is slow. Near the river, or anywhere the water table is close, a cut cottonwood can be a thicket in a couple of seasons.
Grinding effectively removes the stump from the ground while preventing new foliage from growing from the roots. With strong sprouters, tell the arborist if shoots are already coming up away from the stump. Our tree guide pages on Fremont cottonwood and weeping willow describe how each behaves.
What about a stump on the riverbank or a ditch bank?
Stop and ask first. Roots hold a bank together, and a stump on the edge of moving water is doing a job even after the tree is gone. Grinding it out can be the wrong move. The arborist will look at where the stump sits and what it is holding, and may suggest cutting it low and leaving it.
Work in or beside a river channel can also involve agencies that have nothing to do with trees. Before any ground is disturbed at the water's edge, check with Washoe County about what applies to your parcel.
Old Verdi, old stumps
The homes that predate 1960 came with trees that are now very large or already gone. A stump from one of those can be several feet across at the ground, with roots under a driveway or an outbuilding. Decide how much you want removed: the stump only, or the flare and surface roots as well. It will be written on the estimate.
Fire on the canyon's doorstep
The USDA Forest Service ranks Verdi's wildfire risk to homes higher than 98.8% of US communities, with about a third of buildings in the direct exposure zone. The 1994 Crystal Fire, mapped at 7,392 acres, and the 2006 Verdi Fire, mapped at 5,662 acres, both have their centers within about 4 miles in the federal record. Keep grindings and dead stumps away from buildings. See defensible space in Verdi.

Stump grinding questions in Verdi
Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.
Will a cottonwood stump in Verdi grow back if I leave it?
Very likely. Cottonwoods sprout from the stump and roots, and they do it faster where there is water. Grinding the stump is the first step in stopping it.
Should I grind a stump on the bank of the Truckee River?
Ask first. Roots help hold a bank. The arborist will look at it, and you should check with Washoe County before disturbing ground at the water's edge.
Do you serve the California side of Verdi?
No. We work on the Nevada side only.
How much precipitation does Verdi get?
About 19.7 inches a year at the Reno 9.0 W station in Verdi, by NOAA's 1991-2020 normals.
