Stump grinding in Galena and along the Mount Rose Highway, ZIP 89511, often follows fire-safety thinning, and not every stump needs grinding: near the house it should go, while out on the lot a low cut can be enough. Do all the stumps have to be ground after thinning?
No. When trees are thinned for defensible space in Galena, a property can end up with a dozen stumps. Grinding every one is rarely necessary.
A sensible way to sort them: stumps in lawn, beside paths and driveways, or where you want to plant get ground. Stumps close to the house get ground and the grindings hauled, because University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Living With Fire guide treats the first 5 feet around a home as an ember-resistant zone. Stumps well out on the lot, among native brush, can often be cut low and left. The arborist will go through them with you one at a time.
| Where the stump is | Usual approach |
|---|---|
| Within 5 feet of the house | Grind, haul the grindings |
| Lawn, path, driveway edge, planting bed | Grind |
| Out on the lot in native ground | Low cut, or grind if you want it gone |
What do rock and slope change?
A lot. Grinder teeth are made for wood. On rocky foothill ground a stump can have cobbles packed among its roots, and some stumps sit on ground too steep for a machine to work on. Neither can be judged from the street. That is why the estimate is done on site, by someone who looks at the base of each stump and the route to it.
Why does fire come up on a stump page?
Because it is the reason many of these trees were cut. The 2024 Davis Fire, mapped at 5,824 acres, and the 2011 Washoe Drive Fire, mapped at 3,178 acres, both have their centers within about 5 miles of this ZIP's town point in the federal fire record. ZIP 89511 has no wildfire rating of its own. For Washoe County as a whole, the USDA Forest Service ranks risk to homes higher than 97.2% of US counties.
A dead stump is dry wood. So is a heap of grindings. Neither belongs against a wall or under a deck.
Pine stumps do not sprout, but they do linger
Pines do not send up shoots from a cut stump the way cottonwoods, aspens and elms do, so sprouting is not the worry with most stumps here. Time is. A resinous stump in dry ground stays put for many years. If it is in your way now, it will be in your way for a long while. Aspens are the exception and sprout freely from their roots.
One trip up the hill
List every stump on one request, even the ones you are unsure about, and add any tree work you have been putting off. The crew that grinds can also chip brush and haul logs the same visit if it is on the estimate. For trees that still need to come down, see tree removal along the Mt. Rose Highway.

Usually not. Stumps near the house and in used parts of the yard are worth grinding. Stumps out on the lot can often be cut low. The arborist goes through them with you.
Can you grind stumps on rocky ground off the Mt. Rose Highway?

Will a pine stump grow back?
Pines do not resprout from the stump. Aspen, cottonwood and elm can.
