Stump grinding in South Reno (89521)

Stump grinding in South Reno, ZIP 89521, is mostly small stumps in finished landscapes: about 76% of the homes here were built in 2000 or later, so the trees are young and the yards are full of drip line. Battle Born Tree Service reaches South Reno in about 30 minutes without traffic and gives free estimates.

Damonte Ranch, Double Diamond and the neighborhoods around them were landscaped as the houses went up, with trees planted small. When one of those trees dies or outgrows its spot, the stump that is left is modest in size and sits in the middle of an irrigation plan.

At a glance

  • Median home in ZIP 89521 built in 2007
  • About 30 minutes from our Carson City yard without traffic
  • Drip tubing and valve wire are private lines: point them out
  • Replanting in the same spot is the usual goal

Why grind a stump that small?

Because you want the spot back. In a newer yard every planting area was drawn on a plan, and a dead tree leaves a hole in it. A stump poking through rock mulch is something to trip on, and you cannot set a new tree where the old trunk still is.

Small does not mean the stump pulls out by hand. A tree that stood for ten or fifteen years has anchored itself. Grinding takes it out cleanly without tearing up the bed around it.

What should I find before the visit?

The irrigation. A drip line to the old tree almost always circles the trunk, and the valve wire may run alongside. Utilities mark their own buried lines after an 811 request, which is made a few business days ahead. They do not mark your sprinkler system.

  1. Turn on the zone and see which emitters and lines feed the old tree
  2. Flag or photograph where the tubing runs
  3. Measure the side gate at its narrowest point
  4. Note whether there is landscape fabric under the rock
  5. Decide whether you are replanting in the same spot or nearby

Can a new tree go in the same hole?

Stump grinding lets you plant grass, shrubs or even new trees where the tree stood. For a new tree, what you do with the grindings matters, and so does moving the hole a little off the old center. Our guide, can you plant after stump grinding?, covers it. We do the grinding. The planting is yours or your landscaper's.

The 2023 USDA map puts ZIP 89521 in hardiness zone 7a, a half zone colder than central Reno. Pick the replacement for 7a.

Does the HOA care about a stump?

Some associations require a set number of trees in the front yard and expect a dead one to be replaced. If yours does, the stump is the first step, not the last. Read your rules or call the management company before you order work, and ask whether a replacement has to go in the same spot. Our guide to HOA tree rules lists what to check.

Do you grind small stumps in South Reno?

Yes. A small stump in a finished yard is a normal job for us. Send a photo and your gate width with the estimate request.

Will stump grinding damage my drip system?

The tubing at the stump itself is in the way, so find and flag it beforehand. Tell us where the lines run and the work goes around what you have shown us.

Does my South Reno HOA require me to replace the tree?

Many do. Check your association's rules. We grind the stump so a replacement can be planted.
