Lot clearing and brush mowing in Lemmon Valley, NV

Lot clearing in Lemmon Valley is usually a clean-up of ground that has been lived on for forty years or more: brush grown back behind the house, a dead tree or two, old slash piles and overgrown fence lines. Battle Born Tree Service takes all of it in one job with a Bobcat T870 track loader, brush mower, chipper and dump trucks.

The USDA Forest Service ranks wildfire risk to homes in Lemmon Valley higher than 99.2% of US communities, the highest figure of any place we serve in Washoe County. About half of its roughly 1,900 homes were built before 1980.

At a glance

  • Wildfire risk to homes higher than 99.2% of US communities
  • 45.3% of buildings in the direct exposure zone
  • About 53% of homes built before 1980; about 17% manufactured homes
  • Trees, brush, stumps and debris piles handled by one crew

What builds up on an older lot?

Time does the damage. A lot that was cleared when the house went in, around 1979 on the median here, has had decades to fill back in. Shrubs reclaim the back portion. Trees planted as windbreaks age, and some die standing. Prunings and fallen limbs get dragged to a corner and left.

Each of those is a different kind of fuel, and a mower alone does not solve them. That is why we quote Lemmon Valley properties as a clean-up, not as a single pass with one machine.

What does a full clean-up include?

A full clean-up covers regrown brush and weeds, thickets, dead or failing trees, old stumps and slash piles, each with its own method as the table shows, and the estimate lists every item.

What does a full clean-up include?
What we findWhat we do with it
Regrown sagebrush, rabbitbrush and weedsBrush mowing to a low stubble
Thickets and volunteer saplingsMasticating or hand cutting and chipping
Dead or failing treesTree removal, sectioned down where space is tight
Old stumps in the wayStump grinding
Slash piles, fallen limbs, logsLoaded with the track loader and hauled

A certified arborist walks the property first and tells you which trees are worth keeping. The estimate lists each item so you can see what is in and what is not.

Why direct exposure changes the plan

The Forest Service puts 45.3% of Lemmon Valley's buildings in the direct exposure zone and 54.4% in the indirect zone. Almost none are rated minimal. Direct exposure means wildland vegetation stands close enough to carry flame to the building, so on those lots the outer ground matters as much as the area by the door.

The University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Living With Fire guide sets the outer zone at 30 to 100 feet and asks for dead and dried vegetation to be eliminated there and shrubs separated. On a Lemmon Valley lot, that outer band is exactly where the regrowth is.

Woodpiles and wood heat

About 9% of Lemmon Valley households heat mainly with wood, according to the American Community Survey, against about 1% across Washoe County. A wood-heated home has a woodpile, and the Living With Fire guide lists woodpiles among the things to keep out of the first 5 feet around a house.

If you burn wood, tell the arborist at the estimate. Whether sound logs from your own removals are bucked and left for you or hauled away is your choice, and it is written into the estimate either way.

Lot clearing and brush mowing questions in Lemmon Valley

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.

Can you haul off old brush piles on my Lemmon Valley property?

Yes. Brush, limbs and logs are loaded and trucked away. If a pile holds anything other than wood and vegetation, tell us at the estimate.

Will you leave the wood from dead trees for my stove?

If you want it, say so at the estimate and it will be written in. Otherwise logs are hauled.

Does one visit cover trees and brush together?

That is how we prefer to scope it. One estimate covers the mowing, the removals, the stumps and the hauling, and the crew brings what the list needs.

Is a permit needed to clear brush in Lemmon Valley?

Our research found no permit rule for clearing brush on your own lot in unincorporated Washoe County. Ask the county before grading or building.
