Tree trimming and pruning in Galena and along the Mt. Rose Highway (ZIP 89511)

Tree trimming in Galena and along the Mount Rose Highway is conifer pruning: lifting the lower limbs of pines away from the ground, removing dead wood, and keeping branches off roofs at about 5,634 feet. Battle Born Tree Service does this work with climbers and a 75-foot boom truck, about 35 minutes from our Carson City yard without traffic.

Aerial lift working on a large snow-covered pine

Climb the highway from the valley floor and the trees change from planted shade trees to native pines. Pruning changes with them. A pine is not shaped like a maple, and it is not pruned in the same season.

At a glance

  • Conifer pruning at about 5,634 feet, hardiness zone 6b
  • Limbing up removes the ladder between ground fire and crown
  • 2024 Davis Fire mapped within about 10 miles
  • Most conifers are pruned in early spring and summer

How is pruning a pine different?

A pine grows from the tips and does not sprout new branches from old bare wood. Cut a limb back to a stub and the stub dies. So conifer pruning is mostly whole-branch removal at the trunk, plus taking out what is dead, broken or rubbing. There is very little shaping, and no topping.

Timing differs too. Our rule for most conifers is early spring and summer, while most deciduous trees are pruned in late winter. Dead and hazardous limbs are removed in any month.

What is limbing up, and why does it matter on this highway?

Limbing up means removing a conifer's lowest branches so there is clear trunk between the ground and the green crown. The University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Living With Fire guide calls low growth that carries fire from the ground into treetops ladder fuel, and tells homeowners to remove it.

The reason is close by. The Davis Fire of 2024, mapped at 5,824 acres, and the Washoe Drive Fire of 2011, mapped at 3,178 acres, are both mapped within about 10 miles of this ZIP, two of the 27 fire perimeters of 300 acres or more mapped there since 1980. The USDA Forest Service has no separate record for 89511; it rates Washoe County's wildfire risk to homes higher than 97.2% of US counties.

How high to limb each tree depends on its size and the slope below it, so the arborist marks trees on site. See ladder fuels and limbing up and our Galena defensible space page for the full yard.

What does winter do to trees up here?

It loads them. The 2023 USDA map puts ZIP 89511 in hardiness zone 6b, where the coldest night of an average year falls between 0 and minus 5 degrees. That is the coldest zone of any Reno ZIP we serve. No long-term weather station sits close enough to the upper highway for us to quote a snowfall figure honestly, so we will not.

Snow snaps tops and peels long limbs. Afterward, pruning is repair: a clean cut below the break so the wound can close, and removal of hangers before they fall. Read storm and snow-load breakage for what can be saved.

Are dead branches in a pine a bad sign?

Lower branches shaded out by the crown above die naturally and are no cause for alarm. Dead tips scattered through the top, or a whole crown fading from green to straw, are different. During pruning the arborist checks for the signs described in bark beetles in pines and tells you what was found. We identify the problem and advise on pruning or removal.

Can the trucks reach my trees?

Many lots off the highway are sloped, with long driveways. The arborist looks at access during the free estimate. Where the boom truck cannot set up, climbers prune from ropes and the brush is carried to the chipper.

Tree trimming and pruning questions in Galena and Mt. Rose Highway

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.

When should pines be pruned in Galena?

Dead or hazardous limbs any time. For planned pruning, early spring and summer suit most conifers.

How high should the lower limbs be removed?

It varies with the tree's height and the slope. The arborist marks each tree on site instead of using one number for the whole lot.

Can you fix a pine whose top broke in the snow?

Often the break can be cut back cleanly. Whether the tree keeps a sound structure afterward is something the arborist judges in person.

Do you serve the Mt. Rose Highway from Carson City?

Yes. ZIP 89511 is about 26 miles from our yard, about 35 minutes without traffic.
