Defensible space and fire mitigation in Ruhenstroth, NV

Defensible space in Ruhenstroth is a response to a long fire record: 24 perimeter records of 300 acres or more since 1980 are mapped with centers within about 10 miles, three of them over 17,000 acres. Battle Born Tree Service clears brush, limbs up trees and removes dead material around homes here, about 39 minutes from Carson City.

Ruhenstroth lies south of Gardnerville along US 395, against the west foot of the Pine Nut Mountains. Those mountains are pinyon, juniper and sagebrush country, and they have burned often.

How exposed are the houses?

The USDA Forest Service counts about 890 buildings and puts about 31% in the direct exposure zone and 69% in the indirect zone. None is minimal. Risk to homes ranks higher than 96.9% of US communities.

Direct exposure is the lots that touch open brush. Indirect exposure is everyone else, and with large fires nearby that means embers arriving ahead of the flames. For both groups the first 5 feet around the house decides a lot, and it is the cheapest zone to fix.

Pinyon, juniper and sagebrush close to home

Where a lot still carries native pinyon or juniper, the low branches reach the ground and the tree burns from the bottom up. In the 30 to 100 foot zone the Living With Fire guide asks for space between shrubs and trees and no ladder fuels. For us that means lifting the lower limbs, removing the brush beneath the crown and taking out some trees so the remaining ones stand apart.

Sagebrush and rabbitbrush between them are cut with the brush mower or the masticating head on our Bobcat T870. Details are on the Ruhenstroth lot clearing and brush mowing page.

Newer homes, young landscaping

About 44% of Ruhenstroth's homes were built in 2000 or later and about 96% are detached houses (American Community Survey; about 1,700 residents, so approximate). Newer homes tend to have young trees and bark or wood mulch around the foundation. The guide asks for no wood mulch in the first 5 feet. Swapping it for rock is a job for you or a landscaper. Pulling the shrubs that sit in it is something we do.

After a fire season, what changes?

A burn nearby does not make a neighborhood safe. Grass and brush return, and unburned islands remain. The Minden weather station, about 6 miles away, averages about 9.3 inches of precipitation a year, enough to regrow cheatgrass every spring. Treat defensible space as upkeep. The heavy clearing is done once, then a lighter visit keeps it in shape.

The three defensible space zones

0-5 ft5-30 ft30-100 ft
  1. Zone 0: 0 to 5 feet. Ember-resistant zone. Nothing that burns against the house: clear dead leaves and needles, move firewood away, cut back branches that touch walls or hang over the roof.
  2. Zone 1: 5 to 30 feet. Lean, clean and green. Remove dead plants and ladder fuels, limb up trees, and break up continuous shrubs such as junipers.
  3. Zone 2: 30 to 100 feet. Reduced fuel. Thin crowded trees and brush so fire stays on the ground and slows down. This is where the brush mower and masticator work.
