What do the fire numbers say?
The USDA Forest Service record for Fish Springs counts 552 buildings: about 92% in the direct exposure zone, about 8% indirect and none minimal. Risk to homes is higher than 98.8% of US communities and about 89% of Nevada communities; the likelihood of a fire reaching the community is higher than about 88% of Nevada's.
Nineteen perimeters of 300 acres or more since 1980 have a mapped center within about 10 miles, including Conner (2025, 17,714 acres), Preacher (2017, 5,386 acres) and Numbers (2020, 18,380 acres).
What happens in each zone?
- 0 to 5 feet: clear plants and material that can burn against the house; woodpiles and propane tanks do not belong here.
- 5 to 30 feet: remove dead shrubs and trees, and prune dead wood and low limbs from trees that stay.
- 30 to 100 feet: reduce brush and limb up trees so a ground fire cannot climb into the crown.
These zones come from UNR Extension's Living With Fire guide; Nevada law does not set a single distance.
Woodpiles and propane
With about 22% of households heating with wood and about 51% with bottled gas (ACS 2020-2024, approximate), most properties have a stack or a tank. Moving them is the owner's job. Clearing dry grass and brush around the new spot is work we can add. Ask your propane supplier or fire agency about clearance for the tank itself.
Machines for acreage
Large parcels are a brush-and-grass job for a track loader with a brush mower or masticating head. See mastication vs brush mowing vs hand clearing and masticating. Fish Springs is about 41 minutes from our yard, so group the whole list into one visit. Call 775.232.8243 to confirm we can come.

This community is in Douglas County, outside the Tahoe Basin, so TRPA rules do not apply. We have not found a Douglas County permit for removing or pruning a tree on private property.
For a tree in a road right-of-way ask the county, and check any recorded covenants or association rules for your parcel. The agency decides.

The three defensible space zones
- Zone 0: 0 to 5 feet. Ember-resistant zone. Nothing that burns against the house: clear dead leaves and needles, move firewood away, cut back branches that touch walls or hang over the roof.
- Zone 1: 5 to 30 feet. Lean, clean and green. Remove dead plants and ladder fuels, limb up trees, and break up continuous shrubs such as junipers.
- Zone 2: 30 to 100 feet. Reduced fuel. Thin crowded trees and brush so fire stays on the ground and slows down. This is where the brush mower and masticator work.
Zones from the University of Nevada, Reno Extension Living With Fire guide (2023). Your fire protection district may set its own rules.
