Tree trimming and pruning in Golden Valley, NV

Tree trimming in Golden Valley tends to mean maintenance pruning on full-grown trees, because about half the homes here were built before 1980 and the trees beside them have had more than four decades to spread over roofs, driveways and fences. Battle Born Tree Service prunes them to a plan from an ISA Certified Arborist, about 47 minutes from our Carson City yard.

The 75-foot Altec GMC boom truck: yellow cab, blue body, Battle Born livery and phone number

Golden Valley is a small community north of Reno off US 395: about 470 housing units on roughly 3.6 square miles, nearly all owner-occupied. Room around each house means big trees have been left to get big. Pruning here is about keeping them, without letting dead wood, low limbs or heavy branch ends turn into the problem.

At a glance

  • About half of Golden Valley homes were built before 1980
  • About 65% of buildings sit in the direct wildfire exposure zone

What does a 45-year-old yard tree need?

The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the median Golden Valley home at 1980 (a small community, so treat the figure as approximate). A tree that went in with a house of that age is at full size now, and the work changes. Shaping is over. What it needs is upkeep.

That usually means crown cleaning, which takes out dead, broken and rubbing branches, and reduction, which shortens a long limb back to a side branch where it hangs over a roof or a shop. Thinning is done only where it helps. We do not top trees. The terms are explained in crown thinning, raising and reduction.

Why do low limbs matter more here than in town?

The USDA Forest Service places about 65% of Golden Valley's buildings in the direct wildfire exposure zone, where nearby wildland vegetation can carry fire straight to a structure. Fire perimeters mapped within about 10 miles include the Reservoir Fire (1999, 6,163 acres) and the Poeville Road Fire (2020, 2,973 acres).

Low branches are the link between burning grass or sagebrush and the crown of a tree. Raising the crown removes that link, and it is ordinary pruning. University of Nevada, Reno Extension calls the 5 to 30 feet around a house the lean, clean and green zone. An arborist can raise limbs in that zone on the same visit as the rest of the pruning. See ladder fuels and limbing up and our Golden Valley defensible space page.

Snow, dry years and when to prune

The Stead weather station, about 3 miles away at the same elevation, averages 16.7 inches of snowfall a year. A volunteer rain gauge in Golden Valley itself (Reno 5.3 N) averages about 10 inches of precipitation. That is thin for a large shade tree, so yard trees here live on irrigation, and a tree short on water sheds branches.

Dead or hazardous branches can come out in any month. Otherwise our rule is to prune when the tree is dormant: late winter for most deciduous trees, early spring and summer for most conifers.

How the crew reaches a tall crown

Where a truck can set up, the work is done from our 75-foot Altec boom truck. Where it cannot, a climber goes up. Brush goes through the chipper and the yard is raked before the crew leaves. An arborist walks the property first, and the free estimate lists what will be done to each tree.

Tree trimming and pruning questions in Golden Valley

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.

When should trees be pruned in Golden Valley?

Dead or hazardous limbs at any time. For routine pruning, late winter suits most deciduous trees, and early spring and summer suit most conifers.

Do I need a permit to prune a tree in Golden Valley?

We have not found a Washoe County permit for pruning a tree on private property. Golden Valley is unincorporated, so the City of Reno right-of-way rule does not reach it. Ask the county if your tree stands on a road easement.

Can pruning and defensible space work go on one estimate?

Yes. Tell the office you want both looked at, and the arborist will write them up together.

How far is Golden Valley from your yard?

About 39 miles, or about 47 minutes without traffic, from 6301 US Highway 50 East in Carson City.
