Tree trimming and pruning in Caughlin Ranch (ZIP 89519)

Tree trimming in Caughlin Ranch is about trees in their thirties: the median home in ZIP 89519 was built in 1993, and the trees planted with it have now reached the roofs, the views and each other. Battle Born Tree Service prunes them with an arborist's plan that fits association standards and the fire risk of a hillside neighborhood.

A thirty-year-old tree is at an awkward age. It is too big to ignore and too valuable to cut hard. What it needs is a first full pruning by someone who knows where it is headed.

What does a tree planted in the 1990s need now?

Room, in three directions. Up: lower limbs have dropped over walks, drives and lawns as they grew heavy, and crown raising lifts them back. Out: branch tips have reached the gutters and the house next door, and clearance pruning takes them back to a side branch. Through: the interior has filled with crossing and dead twigs, and crown cleaning opens it.

Trees planted in groups also start to compete at this age. The arborist may suggest thinning one tree's crown to favor a better neighbor, or tell you a crowded group would be healthier with one tree fewer.

Can pruning open a view without ruining the tree?

Sometimes. Selective thinning and raising can open a window through or under a crown and leave a natural-looking tree. Cutting the top off to see over it is topping, and we do not do it. The regrowth is fast, weak and taller than before within a few seasons. Why topping a tree is not pruning shows the result.

If the tree in the way is not yours, it is not ours to cut either. Talk to the owner or the association.

What will the association want to see?

About 76% of homes in this ZIP are owner-occupied and about 78% are single-family detached, and Caughlin Ranch is a planned community with its own landscape rules. Some trees along streets, trails and common areas belong to the association, not the lot owner.

Our estimates are detailed and easy to understand. Each tree is listed with the work proposed, so the page can go to the association with your request. Start with HOA tree rules: what to check first.

How does fire shape pruning on this hillside?

It adds a second purpose to the same cuts. The Pinehaven Fire of 2020, mapped at 512 acres, and the Belli Ranch Fire of 1996, mapped at 6,724 acres, are among 30 fires of 300 acres or more mapped within about 10 miles of this ZIP since 1980. The USDA Forest Service has no separate figure for 89519; it rates Reno's wildfire risk to homes higher than 97.7% of US communities.

Raising crowns off the ground, clearing limbs from roofs and removing dead wood all reduce what a fire can use. Ornamental junipers under a tree's skirt are the usual weak point, as junipers and other high-hazard plants explains. The whole-lot version of this work is on our Caughlin Ranch defensible space page.

When do you prune in Caughlin Ranch?

Late winter for most deciduous trees, early spring and summer for most conifers, and any time for dead or hazardous limbs. The ZIP sits at about 4,884 feet in USDA zone 7b.

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.

Will you prune to my Caughlin Ranch association's standards?

Give us the standard or the approval letter and the arborist will plan the work to match, provided it does not call for topping.

Can you thin a tree to bring back my view?

Often a view can be improved by thinning and raising. The arborist will tell you on site what is possible without harming the tree.

My trees have grown into each other. What can be done?

Crown cleaning and selective reduction can separate them. In a crowded group, removing one tree is sometimes the better answer.
