How do you prune a tree and keep its shade?
By taking less than people expect. A shade tree does its work with leaves, so stripping the interior or cutting the crown back hard defeats the purpose and exposes bark that has never seen full sun. Our arborists clean out the dead and crossing wood, shorten only the limbs that are overextended, and leave the canopy full.
That restraint matters in Sparks. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Sparks station show an average summer high of 88.9 degrees and 8.38 inches of precipitation in a year. A tree here is already working hard. Remove too much leaf area and it has less to live on.
If there is little snow, why prune before winter?
For the dead wood, more than the snow. Sparks averages 6.8 inches of snowfall, about a third of the 20.9 inches recorded at Reno-Tahoe International Airport a few miles southwest. With less snow load, the limbs to worry about are the ones already dead or cracked.
Dormant-season pruning is still the right time for most deciduous trees, in late winter, because the structure is visible and the tree is at rest. Warning signs before a tree fails lists what to look for from the ground.
Which Sparks neighborhoods need which pruning?
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey counts about 46,000 housing units in Sparks. About 34% were built before 1980 and about 9% before 1960; about 40% have been built since 2000.
- Older streets: large shade trees with decades of growth. Crown cleaning, weight reduction over roofs, and a check of the main forks.
- Homes from the 1980s and 1990s: trees reaching full size. Crown raising over driveways and clearance from eaves and fences.
- Newer subdivisions: young trees. Structural pruning now, so they do not need corrective work later. Spanish Springs, just north, is almost entirely this kind.
Do I need a permit to trim a tree in Sparks?
We found no City of Sparks permit for pruning a tree on private property. The Truckee Meadows Water Authority's summary of local ordinances reports that the Sparks City Council eliminated the city's Urban Forestry Program in 2008 because of budget cuts. For a tree by the street or in a common area, ask the city or your association who is responsible before work is booked.
How does Sparks compare for wildfire?
It rates lower than its neighbors. The USDA Forest Service ranks wildfire risk to homes in Sparks higher than 95% of US communities, with about 3.6% of buildings in the direct exposure zone. That is still high nationally, but fire is not the main reason to prune in most of the city. Tree health, clearance and safety are.
