Tree trimming and pruning in Mound House, NV

Tree trimming in Mound House is done by the crew next door: the Battle Born Tree Service yard on US Highway 50 East is about 2 miles away, about 3 minutes without traffic. Most pruning here is practical, clearing branches from buildings, gates, truck routes and fence lines, and lifting crowns off the brush.

Mound House sits in Lyon County at about 4,920 feet, just up the highway from our yard. It has homes, and it has shops, storage yards and working lots, where a tree is judged by whether it is in the way.

At a glance

  • About 2 miles from the yard at 6301 US Highway 50 East
  • Clearance pruning for buildings, gates, signs and truck access
  • Limbing up where trees stand in open brush
  • Residential and commercial properties

What does pruning look like on a working property?

It starts with what the tree is interfering with. The arborist walks the lot with the owner and lists the conflicts, then plans cuts that solve each one without wrecking the tree.

What does pruning look like on a working property?
The problemThe pruning
Trucks and trailers scraping under a tree at the gateCrown raising to an agreed height over the drive
Limbs on a metal roof or against a wallClearance pruning back to sound side branches
A sign or a yard light hidden by growthSelective thinning and reduction on that side
Dead limbs over a parking or storage areaDead wooding
Branches through a shared fenceReduction to the line, agreed with both owners where needed

A tree pruned this way keeps doing its job, which on a bare lot is usually shade and a windbreak. One hacked back with whatever was handy tends to die back from the cuts and cost more later.

Why lift the crowns off the ground?

Because of what grows under them. Mound House has open ground with sagebrush and grass between properties, and fire has crossed it before: the Moundhouse Fire of 1983, mapped at 2,345 acres, and the Linehan Fire of 2006, mapped at 5,863 acres, are both mapped within about 10 miles. The USDA Forest Service places about 38% of Lyon County's buildings in the direct wildfire exposure zone. Mound House has no rating of its own.

Low branches that reach into brush are what the University of Nevada, Reno Extension calls ladder fuels: growth that carries fire from the ground into the tops of trees. Removing them, and the brush beneath, is simple pruning with a large payoff. Ladder fuels and limbing up covers it, and the wider job is on our Mound House defensible space page.

Does being two miles away matter for pruning?

It makes small jobs easy to fit in. The boom truck and chipper do not have far to travel, so a single tree at a shop entrance is as reasonable to ask about as a full property. It also means the arborist can come back and look at a tree again in a different season without it being an expedition.

When is pruning done in Mound House?

Dead and hazardous branches at any time. Otherwise, when the tree is dormant: late winter for most deciduous trees, early spring and summer for most conifers. Mound House falls in USDA hardiness zone 7b on the 2023 map. Clearance work that cannot wait, such as a limb blocking a truck route, is done when it is needed, with the cuts kept as small as the problem allows.
