Mound House is the closest community to our gate. It is over the Lyon County line, on the grade between Carson City and Dayton, and it is mostly shops, yards and homes on open ground. Trees are fewer here than in town, which is why the ones that stand matter.
At a glance
- About 2.1 miles from our yard on US Highway 50 East
- Lyon County: FEMA rates winter weather risk Relatively High
- Blocked gates, driveways and shop yards cleared
- Backhoe, skid steer and track loader in our own fleet
What does a tree emergency look like in Mound House?
Mound House sits at about 4,920 feet, a little higher than downtown Carson City, on ground with little to slow the wind. A windbreak row or a lone shade tree takes the full force of a storm. When one goes, it tends to land across a gate, a fence line, a parked truck or the only way into a yard.
For a business, a blocked gate stops the day. Clearing roads and driveways has been part of our storm clean-up from the start, and for heavy wood we bring the 2014 Bobcat T870 track loader or the backhoe along with the saws.
The safety order does not change
- Anyone hurt or pinned: call 911.
- A wire down, or a tree leaning into one: move away and report it to NV Energy. Do not touch the tree, the fence or anything else the wire might be touching.
- Keep staff, customers and animals away from the tree.
- Call us at 775.232.8243 and say what is blocked.
What we can say about the weather, and what we cannot
Mound House has no Census data of its own and no weather station of its own, so we will not quote a local snowfall number. The nearest long-record station is in Carson City, where the 1991-2020 normal is 14.0 inches of snow a year. At the county level, FEMA's National Risk Index rates Lyon County's winter weather risk as Relatively High and its strong wind risk as Relatively Low.
Fire is part of the record here as well. The 1983 Moundhouse Fire, mapped at 2,345 acres, and the 2006 Linehan Fire, mapped at 5,863 acres, both have their centers within about 2 miles. Whatever killed it, a dead tree can stand for years and then drop in an ordinary wind. If you have one, how to tell if a tree is dead or dying is worth a read before the next storm.
Is a short drive a faster response?
It is a shorter drive, and that is all we will claim. Three minutes of highway is not an arrival promise. After a severe storm we go to existing clients first and then to anyone who needs help, and a life-safety call anywhere in the service area comes ahead of a blocked gate next door.
After the tree is off
Debris is chipped or loaded and hauled away. If the tree stood near a building or a line, ask the arborist about utility and structure clearance for what is left. Free estimates cover follow-up work the same as any other job.
