Fallon is the Churchill County seat, in the irrigated Lahontan Valley, and at about 3,965 feet it is the lowest town we serve. It is one of the towns Battle Born Tree Service has long listed in its service area.
At a glance
- Lowest elevation in our service area, about 3,965 feet
- 4.77 inches of precipitation a year at the Fallon Experiment Station
- About 40% of homes built before 1980
- About half of homes are rented, so the owner may not be the person living there
What is different about pruning at the low end of the service area?
Heat. The Fallon Experiment Station, about a mile from the city center, has an average summer high of 90.4 degrees and averages 4.77 inches of precipitation and 4.5 inches of snow a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Snow load, which drives so much pruning in Carson City and on the Comstock, is a small factor here.
Sun is the large one. A dense crown shades its own limbs and the ground over its roots. Heavy thinning lets sun onto bark that has never seen it and dries the soil below. So pruning in Fallon is conservative: dead, broken and badly placed branches come out, the canopy stays. Where a yard depends on a tree for afternoon shade, the arborist plans the cuts around keeping it.
Old trees in town, younger ones at the edges
About 40% of Fallon homes were built before 1980 and about 16% before 1960, with a median year of 1985 (ACS 2020-2024). About a quarter have been built since 2000. So the city has both: mature shade trees on the older streets that need dead wooding and weight taken off long limbs, and younger trees in newer tracts that need structure.
For the older trees, the questions are the ones in our guide to warning signs before a tree fails: cracks, cavities, dead tops, mushrooms at the base. Pruning addresses some of these. Others call for a closer look by the arborist.
Pruning for landlords and property managers
About 51% of Fallon homes are owner-occupied, one of the lowest shares in our service area. Rental property changes the pruning brief. The owner is rarely on site, tenants park and play under the trees, and a dead limb is a liability that nobody notices until it falls.
We give landlords a written estimate tree by tree, so a property with several trees can be handled in one visit. Dead wood over driveways, walks and roofs comes first. See how we work with property managers.
Does Fallon need fire pruning?
Rarely. The Forest Service ranks Fallon's risk to homes at about the 31st percentile of US communities, with about 96% of buildings in the minimal exposure zone and no large fire perimeter mapped with a center within about 10 miles since 1980. We say that plainly because it is what the data shows.
