June checklist
- Water deeply and less often, to about 18 inches
- Check mulch depth, 2 to 4 inches (ISA), and keep it off trunks
- Prune conifers and take out dead wood
- Mow or thin grass and brush in Zones 1 and 2 before July
- Look for scorch, wilt and thinning crowns on stressed trees
- Remove dead limbs hanging over roofs, drives and play areas
- Check that irrigation reaches the full drip line
The Reno airport's mean temperature rises 8.9 degrees from May to June, to 69.2 F, with an average high of 84.6 F. Precipitation of 0.41 inches is nearly the last real rain: July, August and September each average no more than 0.26 inches at the four valley stations.
June weather at five stations
Carson City gets 0.37 inches of precipitation in June and Minden 0.33, down from 0.51 and 0.61 in May. Fallon has 0.36 and the Reno airport 0.41. Glenbrook's 0.58 inches is the first month below 1 inch there. Highs average 84.6 F at the Reno airport and 85.1 F at Fallon.
| Station (elevation, ft) | Mean temp (F) | Precip (in.) | Snow (in.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reno airport (4,410) | 69.2 | 0.41 | 0.0 |
| Carson City (4,761) | 65.0 | 0.37 | 0.0 |
| Minden (4,709) | 63.1 | 0.33 | 0.1 |
| Glenbrook (Tahoe) (6,350) | 55.5 | 0.58 | no normal |
| Fallon (3,965) | 66.9 | 0.36 | 0.0 |
Station normals, not town averages. NOAA flags Glenbrook's temperature normals as reduced completeness and publishes no snowfall normal there.
What the trees are doing
Growth peaks and water use rises with the temperature. A tree that was only barely watered in May shows it by the end of June. Shallow, frequent sprinkling leaves roots near the surface, where heat and drought reach them first.
Jobs that fit June
Conifer pruning is still on the calendar, since early spring and summer suit most pines and spruces. Dead wooding fits any month. This is a good month to ask an arborist to look at a large tree before the summer winds: see preparing trees for Washoe Zephyr winds, and for limbs that look wrong, warning signs before a tree fails.
Fuel work before the heat
Do mowing and clearing before July. Machines working in cured grass can throw sparks, so summer work is planned around conditions and any restrictions in force. Reduce grass and brush in Zone 2 and keep Zone 0, the first 5 feet, clear of anything that burns, as University of Nevada, Reno Extension describes. Piles of cut brush, limbs or firewood should not sit near the house. See free evaluations and chipping programs by fire district.
Valley versus lake
Glenbrook's June mean of 55.5 F is below the Reno airport's May mean of 60.3 F, so lakeside trees run behind the valleys in the season. The rule still holds: deep, infrequent watering. The phone at 775.232.8243 is staffed seven days a week, and estimates are free. A certified arborist assesses every job before work begins.
