Tree care in July in Northern Nevada

July is the hottest month of the tree year in the valleys, with the Reno airport averaging 77.2 F and 0.20 inches of precipitation. The job is deep watering, mulch, a clean Zone 0 around the house and watching crowns for stress.

July checklist

  • Water mature trees deeply, to about 18 inches, out to the canopy edge
  • Check mulch, 2 to 4 inches (ISA), kept off the trunk
  • Look for scorched, wilted or thinning crowns
  • Keep leaves, needles and woodpiles out of the first 5 feet around the house
  • Call 811 before any stump grinding
  • Have dead limbs over structures removed
  • Keep ladder fuels pruned under larger trees

Highs average 93.9 F at the Reno airport and 94.2 F at Fallon, while Glenbrook on the Tahoe shore tops out at 76.6 F.

July weather at five stations

Fallon has the lowest July precipitation at 0.12 inches, and Carson City has 0.18. The Reno airport's 77.2 F mean is the warmest of its year, and Minden averages 70.1 F against Glenbrook's 63.1 F. No station records snow.

What the trees are doing

Trees draw hard on stored soil water. Leaf scorch, curling and early yellowing can follow a hot spell. Siberian elm tolerates cold and dry ground better than most shade trees, but old trees still shed limbs. See drought stress and dieback.

Jobs that fit July

Watering is the main job, along with checking that mulch still covers the root zone. Dead wooding, hazard pruning and removal fit any month. For large removals near a house, wires or fences, a crane can reduce time and impact on the surroundings. Stump grinding is fine in summer; call 811 first so marked lines are known before anyone digs.

Keep fire from the door

Dry vegetation is the fire concern now. Living With Fire keeps Zone 0, the first 5 feet, free of woodpiles, combustible mulch, dead leaves and needles, and describes Zone 1 as lean, clean and green. Pine needles in gutters and on roofs are fuel. Remove them, and keep firewood well away from the building.

Valley versus lake

The Tahoe shore runs about 17 degrees cooler on an average July afternoon, 76.6 F against 93.9 F at the Reno airport, but its dry season is real: Glenbrook gets 0.32 inches. The agencies set the rules, not us: TRPA permits apply to live trees over 14 inches DBH. For anything overhead or near a structure, call 775.232.8243. Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.

How do I know a tree is heat-stressed?

Scorched or curled leaves, early yellowing, a thinning crown or small leaves. An arborist can tell stress from disease or decay.

Can I grind a stump in July?

Yes. Call 811 first so underground lines are marked.

Where should firewood be stored in summer?

Away from the house. Living With Fire asks that the first 5 feet around a building hold no woodpiles.
