Crane tree removal in the North Valleys and Stead (89506)

Crane tree removal in the North Valleys is for the older lots of ZIP 89506, where roughly 30% of homes predate 1980 and some trees have grown past what a boom truck or climber can handle near a house. Battle Born Tree Service decides crane or no crane at a free arborist visit, before the machine makes the 50-minute trip.

Half the story here is that many trees do not need a crane at all. About 49% of the homes in 89506 were built in 2000 or later, and a 20-year-old tree is rarely a crane job. The other half is the roughly 30% of homes that predate 1980.

At a glance

  • About 30% of homes in ZIP 89506 were built before 1980, about 49% since 2000
  • Crane, boom truck or climber: the arborist picks the method
  • About 41.6 miles from our Carson City yard
  • Stead station normal: about 16.7 inches of snow a year

Does my tree really need a crane?

Use this rough test. If the tree is taller than the house, stands within a trunk's length of the roof and has no clear ground to come down on, a crane is likely the right tool. If there is open space on one side, or the tree is still young, it probably is not.

We would sooner tell you that at the estimate than send more machine than the job needs. Our 75-foot Altec boom truck handles many removals that do not need a crane, and the crane is brought in when it will make the removal quicker and lighter on the property.

Where are the crane-size trees in 89506?

On the oldest lots. By the Census Bureau's estimate about 30% of the ZIP's roughly 17,400 housing units were built before 1980, which is something over 5,000 homes. Trees planted with those houses have had 45 years or more to grow. About 9% of the housing in the ZIP is manufactured or mobile homes, and a big tree beside one of those is a strong case for lifting wood up and away.

What happens on a crane day?

The crane arrives with the chip truck and crew. It is positioned at the spot chosen during the estimate and steadied on outriggers. A climber secures the crane's line to a section, cuts it and the operator carries it to the drop zone. The ground crew cuts and chips as each piece lands, and the Bobcat T870 loads the logs. Then the yard is raked and the equipment goes home.

Do wind and snow get in the way up here?

Sometimes. The Stead weather station, about 0.2 miles from our reference point for this ZIP and at about 5,100 feet, averages about 11 inches of precipitation and 16.7 inches of snow a year. Lifting a tree section needs steady air, so the crew may hold off for a few hours or move the date if gusts pick up. Wind is also what breaks trees. For limbs already hanging, see our guide to widow-makers after a wind storm.

Is the North Valleys in Reno or the county?

Both. Parts of 89506 are inside the City of Reno and parts are unincorporated Washoe County. For a tree on a private lot inside the city, Reno requires no permit to remove it. If the tree is in a City right-of-way, a Tree Work Permit and a Certified Arborist are required. If your address is in the county, ask Washoe County or your association.

Crane-assisted tree removal questions in the North Valleys and Stead

Still have a question? Call 775.232.8243. Phones are answered seven days a week.

Will you bring a crane all the way to Stead?

Yes, when the tree calls for it. The North Valleys are about 50 minutes from our yard without traffic, so the arborist confirms the method at the estimate and the crane comes once.

What if the crane is not needed for my North Valleys tree?

Then the estimate will be for the boom truck or a climber. The goal is the right method for the tree, and the arborist will explain the choice.

Can you take several trees in one visit?

Yes. If you have more than one large tree, have them all looked at together so the crane can be set up to reach as many as possible.

Is there a number for storm emergencies?

The same one: 775.232.8243, answered 24 hours a day for emergencies. Call 911 first if anyone is hurt, and NV Energy if a line is down.
