April checklist
- Watch for branches that stay bare after neighbors leaf out
- Prune conifers in early spring
- Check irrigation lines, timers and emitters before the heat
- Rake leaf litter and dead needles away from the house
- Remove dead and hanging wood from any tree
- Plan removals for trees that failed to leaf out
- Plan Zone 1 and Zone 2 work around your fire district's expectations
Glenbrook's April mean temperature of 40.6 F equals the Reno airport's February mean, so on the Tahoe shore spring is still a month or two behind the valleys. At Carson City and Minden, April precipitation falls to about half of March's.
April weather at five stations
Carson City and Minden both see precipitation fall by more than half from March to April, to 0.51 and 0.49 inches. Snow is almost gone at the valley stations: 0.4 inches at the Reno airport, 1.5 at Minden, none at Carson City. Glenbrook still gets 1.25 inches of precipitation, nearly three times Fallon's 0.45.
| Station (elevation, ft) | Mean temp (F) | Precip (in.) | Snow (in.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reno airport (4,410) | 51.6 | 0.44 | 0.4 |
| Carson City (4,761) | 48.8 | 0.51 | 0.0 |
| Minden (4,709) | 47.1 | 0.49 | 1.5 |
| Glenbrook (Tahoe) (6,350) | 40.6 | 1.25 | no normal |
| Fallon (3,965) | 49.8 | 0.45 | 0.0 |
Station normals, not town averages. NOAA flags Glenbrook's temperature normals as reduced completeness and publishes no snowfall normal there.
What the trees are doing
Leaves and new needles open, and the canopy fills in. Branches that were killed by winter cold, drought or breakage stay bare while the rest of the crown greens up. Give a doubtful tree a few weeks before deciding. A tree that fails to leaf at all, or a crown that is only partly green, is the kind of case where we recommend an arborist consultation. See how to tell if a tree is dead or dying.
Jobs that fit April
Early spring is the window for most conifers, so book pine, spruce and fir pruning now. Test the irrigation system and walk the lines for leaks before the heat comes, since valley trees live on irrigation. Clear the base of the house: Living With Fire's Zone 0, the first 5 feet, should be free of dead leaves, needles, woodpiles and combustible mulch.
Get ahead of the dry season
Precipitation across the valley stations has dropped to roughly half an inch a month, and from here on irrigation does the heavy lifting. Defensible space work done in April and May happens before the dry months, not during them. See what is defensible space, and for lots with grass and brush, mastication, brush mowing and hand clearing.
Valley versus lake
Around the lake, April can still look like winter. Use snow and soil conditions, not the date. TRPA permits apply to live trees over 14 inches in diameter at breast height.
