Crane work: your questions answered

Crane-assisted removal lifts a tree out in sections, which makes it a good fit for trees near houses, wires and tight yards. Battle Born Tree Service owns the crane, and a certified arborist plans each lift.

A crane on a residential street raises questions. Here is how the work goes, what it needs and what we say about it in our own words.

What is crane-assisted tree removal?

A crane holds each section of the tree while it is cut, then lifts it away instead of dropping it. A climber attaches the crane to the tree at the cut point. The operator takes the weight, and the piece is flown to the drop zone. Our own description of the process starts with choosing a setup location and placing the outriggers. It is how we take trees down where there is no room to drop. See crane-assisted tree removal.

When is a crane the right choice?

A crane makes sense when a tree is close to a house, wires, fences or other things that cannot be hit, or when the yard has no room for a ground crew to lower pieces. The arborist decides at the visit, and sometimes a boom truck or climbing is enough. We describe crane removal as safe, efficient and low impact. The decision rests on the site, not on the tree alone. Our guide on crane versus climbing versus bucket truck explains it.

Does using a crane cost more?

Our site describes crane-assisted removal as a safe and efficient, no impact tree removal at a lower cost than traditional methods. The reasoning is less time on site and less impact on the surroundings. We do not publish prices, so the estimate for your tree is the answer. It is free, and the arborist writes it after seeing the site. Ask for the crane method and a traditional method to be written side by side if you want to compare. See the crane removal guide.

Will the crane damage my yard?

The point of the method is to have less impact on the surroundings, but heavy equipment on a lot always needs planning. The crane sits on outriggers at a chosen setup location, and the arborist picks that spot at the visit. Ask about driveways, lawns, irrigation and anything buried. We cannot promise a result without seeing the site. Pieces fly to a drop zone instead of crossing your landscaping, which is what limits the impact. See crane and lift services.

How much room does the crane need?

We have not published a space requirement, because it changes with the job. The arborist checks where the crane can sit, whether the ground can carry it and how close it can get to the tree. A road, driveway or open lot may serve as the setup location. Tell the office about gates, overhead wires and slopes when you call. The visit is free and settles the question. Our equipment page lists what we own.

Is crane removal faster?

Our own description says crane removal takes less time. We do not promise a duration, because the number of pieces and the setup change every job. Several reviewers mention crews who finish quickly once they start, but those are their experiences, not a commitment. For scheduling, call the office at 775.232.8243. The phone line is staffed seven days a week, and the estimate visit is where timing is discussed. See what our work looks like.

Can you remove a tree that is over my house?

That is one of the main reasons for a crane. Pieces are lifted up and over the roof instead of being lowered onto it. The arborist checks the roof, the trunk and the rigging points before anything is cut. We never tell a reader a tree is safe, and a leaning or damaged tree should be assessed in person. If a tree has already fallen on the house, read the first-hour list in a tree fell on the house and call us.

Do you offer crane and lift services that are not tree removal?

Crane and lift services are on our service list as their own category. Because the crane is part of the company's equipment, you can call about a lift that is not a removal. Describe the job, the site and what has to be moved, and the office will say whether it fits. We have not published a list of lift types, so ask when you call. See crane and lift services.

Who is on site for a crane removal?

The crew sets up the crane, a climber works in the tree, and the crane operator holds each piece before it is lifted away, as described in our process. We have eight people on staff, including two ISA Certified Arborists, and a certified arborist assesses every job beforehand. We do not name individual crew members on the site. The owner is Michael Orlick, and customers call him Mike. Ask the office who will be on your job.
